The meaning of Abandoned by parent / carer in dream | Dream interpretation

You may have a dream in which you are a child again and are being left at school, in a shop, in the street or park by your mother and running after her, perhaps not being able to reach her or not being heard. To be abandoned by a parent or carer in a dream—or to be separated from them so you feel lost and vulnerable—may represent a sense of not being wanted when you were young. This may not actually have been the case, but you may feel that way.

Alternatively, such a dream might also suggest that you are searching in waking life for the emotional freedom to be yourself and to be independent. On another level it may be pointing to your need to find guidance or help from others; many people have dreams of childhood abandonment after the death of a loved one.

If you are trying to attract your parents’ attention but they cannot hear you, such a dream may be saying that you feel neglected emotionally and you need to express your feelings and be understood by others.

ABANDONED

A sense of how others, particularly our parents, felt about us while we were a child.

This feeling of not being wanted may have become habitual. It may not be true that we are not wanted, but our feelings are saying it is.
Example: My mother asked me to go and buy some butter for her.

A chain on my left leg prevented me from going very far. I look down the road and see my mum, dad and my four brothers in the back of a car. I wave and call and they drive right past me, going over the chain I am wearing on my leg’ (Lorraine).

Lorraine’s dream illustrates not only her feelings of being left out of family life, but also the chain on her leg shows her not fully independent.

We often feel abandoned while we are trying to become more independent.

Being abandoned in the sense of allowing sexual and emotional liberty: finding a new freedom, dropping usual social codes and unashamedly expressing ourselves.

Also: it can be an example of one of the functions of dreams, which is to release held back sexuality and emotion.

See alone; functions of dreaming; hero. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

ABANDONED

1- Similar to the sense of being rejected, this represents a sense of how we experienced not being wanted when we were young. This may not actually be how it was but our feelings give us that perception.

For instance, a child having had to go into hospital may- have recurring dreams in adulthood of being abandoned, and may have problems in forming plans for future success.

2- To be abandoned, i.e. without restraint, within a dream may mean that we are looking for freedom. This could be emotional freedom, or the freedom to be ourselves.

3- This links with the Dionvsian concept of abandoning the serious for fun.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

CARER

You may dream of carers or being a carer yourself. Perhaps you are ill in your dream and no carer answers your cries for help? Or conversely, are there too many carers surrounding your bed? Does the carer give you the right kind of medicine or TLC? And who is the carer: a stranger, or someone you know and love? If you have dreams of carers or caring, such dreams may simply be reflecting your anxiety about becoming old and vulnerable. As we live longer, it is natural that issues of caring should show up more frequently in our dreams.

If you are a carer yourself, you may have dreams in which you are a terrible carer, and unwilling or unable to tend to your patient’s or loved one’s needs.

If this is the case, don’t take it literally; your dreams are simply letting you know what the repressed part of you feels and suggesting to you that it might be a good idea to find some outlet in waking life to let off steam.... The Element Encyclopedia

GRANDPARENT

The appearance of grandparents in dreams can highlight your attitude towards them, as well as representing the traditions and beliefs handed down to you by them or your feelings about old age and death. It is often said that parents do not know if they have done a good job raising their children until their children have children of their own. As grandparents are often seen by children to be more sympathetic figures than parents in dreams, they may stand for wisdom, intuition or the desire for an untroubled relationship with your father and mother. Your dream grandparent may have appeared to remind you of the happy times you shared in childhood. Apart from reflecting a yearning for the security of childhood, dreaming of either of your grandparents may suggest that you are in urgent need of their guidance and experience as you face life’s dilemmas and pitfalls.

If you don’t associate the grandparent with impartial wisdom, ask yourself whether he or she may have been an archetype in disguise, especially the priest or priestess, or wise old woman or wise old man. Whichever archetype seems to fit your grandparent, their advice will help set you on the right path; the very appearance of a family elder in a dream indicates that you should look to the past for inspiration and solutions to your current problems. The key may be an ancestral trait you have inherited or an actual event in your family’s history that has parallels with your waking situation.

To dream of a grandparent who has died will usually be reassuring, telling you that you have inherited some of their wisdom. For Jungians, the grandfather may symbolize the wise old man; he can appear in various forms such as king, wizard, prophet, teacher, guru or priest. The grandmother may likewise symbolize the great mother archetype, which may appear as a goddess, wise old woman, prophet or teacher. Jung called these figures ‘mana personalities’, from the Melanesian word for ‘the divine’. These are symbols of the power and the wisdom that lies in the deepest part of the psyche, and dreams that contain mana figures represent a time of great spiritual progress and opportunity in waking life.... PARENTS

In this dream you may be expressing feelings and concerns about your parents that you could not express in daily life. Some believe that this dream usually has nothing to do with your parents, but rather the male and female sides of personality or Self.

The father may represents the expressive, creative, and protective sides of God while the mother His receptive and nurturing side. Carl Jung suggests that women in dreams represent our collective unconscious and men our collective consciousness. Thus, the woman is that force, or current, inside of you that urges you on and inspires you. This knowledge is intuitive and unexpressed by words. Men, on the other hand, represent the active part of us that uses the information received to create the physical reality of our lives. When the two are working together well we have balance and experience awareness leading to peace and productivity. See also: Mother , Father... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Dreaming of a father symbolizes authority and discipline, while a dream of a mother symbolize love and protection - depending, of course, on how the dreamer felt about his or her parents.

Dreaming of one’s parents is perhaps the most subjective dream symbol of all.

As a rule, fathers represent authority and mothers symbolize love, and you will have to figure out the meaning of your dream by correlating the action with your parental attitude and other elements of the dream, but as a general guide: if the parent you dreamed of is dead and he or she spoke to you, you can expect to hear im- portant news; otherwise, a dream of your mother sig- nifies happiness in love or personal affairs, and a dream of your father fore- casts progress in business, professional, or career mat- ters.

PARENTS

You are connecting to your inner sense of authority; who you are as a result of the parents you had.

The voices of our parents become deeply imbedded in us as parts of our personality. This correlates with whatever information they repeatedly presented to us during our formative years.

If their messages were ones of criticism and limitation, they live on within us as those inhibiting parts of our inner monologue.

If our parents were supportive and loving, the same would apply. Chances are that they gave us a combination of messages, some positive and others negative. Depending on where you are in your life, you may be more aligned with the challenges your parents presented than the gifts they gave.

It is usually most effective to deal with feelings of anger and resentment before authentically moving into forgiveness.

The quality of the interaction in the dream will clue you in to where you are in that process.

While dreaming of your parents may inform your actual relationship with them, it is important to consider what the dream is saying about how you parent yourself.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

PARENTS

During the early years of your waking life it is likely that you were physically and emotionally dependent on one or both of your parents or, if either or both were absent, on an alternative mother or father figure. As you emerged into adolescence and adulthood, the chances are you became less reliant on them, yet memories of that early dependency usually remain with you on a conscious or unconscious level. Because your parents had such a great influence over you at a time when your personality was developing and you began to assert your individuality and independence, your feelings towards them will remain intense.

Dreams that feature your parents can have numerous interpretations but the key to understanding them depends on the feelings you associate with your parents, particularly those when you where a child and your parents were the center of your universe. When your dream parents are true to character, the message of your dream is usually easy to understand. For example, if your parents appeared in your dream with words of encouragement and love and they were, or are, this warm and loving in real life, then your dream may simply indicate that you are feeling insecure and in need of validation or unconditional love. Perhaps you dreamt that your parents scolded you about your recent poor performance at work and you have memories of them chiding you harshly over poor grades at school? If this is the case, it may be that your dream is highlighting your dissatisfaction at not living up to the standards your parents instilled in you.

If your parents appear together in your dream, this indicates the rules and codes you learned as a child that still speak to you from within.

If you are hurting, killing, burying or trying to avoid a parent in your dream, this suggests a desire to be free from restraints and values gathered from your parents. You may feel shocked by such a dream, but it is in fact a healthy sign of emerging independence as when your dream parents die or are beaten, you can inherit the power gained from what was good in your relationship.

Dreams in which your parents appear foolish, drunk or disorderly have a similar interpretation; they are a means of gaining independence from internalized values. Dreams in which your parents are crushing you are fairly easy to interpret, suggesting that you need to break away from childhood behavior patterns and develop as an individual. Dreams in which parents die or are dead already can be interpreted the same way. When a parent appears in your environment, home or workplace in your dream and there is no sense of tension, this indicates that you have learned to develop your sense of self and can accept your parents as friends.

Frequent appearances by one or both parents in dreams may be a sign that you have not thrown off an infantile overdependence on them. Jung cites a young man’s dream in which the man’s father appeared as a drunken driver, smashing his car into a wall. This was the exact opposite of the man’s real father, who was a most respectable person, and who was rightly—but far too greatly— respected by the son. What the unconscious was doing through the dream was dethroning the father in order to enable the son to achieve a proper sense of himself as a person in his own right, with his own unique destiny and values. So if your dreams regularly feature your parents, this may suggest that you are more dependent on them than is healthy at this stage in your life. Dreams in which your parents hurl abuse at you or behave inappropriately may therefore be trying to shock you into taking your mother or father off their pedestal so you can give yourself some much-needed emotional independence and freedom.

Whether or not your parent’s behavior in real life mirrors their behavior in its dreamland negative, reoccurring dreams about parents often raise the question of whether it is time for you to become more independent and strike out on your own, regardless of what your parents may think is best for you in waking life.

If you behaved inappropriately towards your parents in your dream, for example swearing at them, listing their faults or even murdering them, such a dream is likely to be a safety valve that enables you to let off tension that you may have been repressing in waking life. It is also likely to be an indication that you need to break free of parental control and take charge of your destiny. Finally, if an interpretation of the appearance of your mother and father still eludes you, it may be that your anima (if you are a man who dreamed of your mother) and your animus (if you are a woman who dreamed of your father) may be making an appearance; alternatively, it may be that another archetype has disguised itself as one of your parents....
