ABREACTION

Example: For some considerable time I have been troubled by a nightmarish dream which is so realistic sometimes I think I am going to die. In my dream I have swallowed something which is literally choking me or is going to poison me. I wake up and rush down the stairs to the kitchen, spitting and choking, holding my throat and making all sorts of disturbing noises which frighten my wife. I have had this dream as many as five or six times a night. My doctor says it could be to do with the last war. I was a child then and my dad constantly had to wake me up to take us down to the shelter, sometimes as many as four times a night, and we were bombed out twice. I cannot recall having any fears about this at the time’ (Mr KT).

Abreaction is a re-experiencing of painful or traumatic events or situations. In many dreams it is obvious that the process underlying dreams is attempting to trigger an abreaction. This suggests the dream process, as Jung and Hadfield say, is a self-regulatory one in our psyche. In many cases where a person explores the feeling content of their dreams in a confident way, abreaction occurs. Although it has been given different names in recent years, such as primal therapy, rolfing, discharge, catharsis, abreaction is still a basic psychological healing process. Pans of our experience become repressed because there is an automatic reaction in us to avoid pain. Therefore painful experience may never be fully felt or understood at the time. Reliving them allows us to review and integrate vital information about ourselves. Frequently all the analysis in the world cannot relieve a neurotic pattern until the repressed emotion holding it in place is released and understood.

The strength with which we hold out against allowing our being to abreact spontaneously is seen in the above example. Mr KT is brought to the brink of reliving his very stressful childhood again and again. Yet he manages to avoid actual memory and, in particular, the experiencing of any childhood emotions and fears.

The opposite is shown in this account by Clive, who explored with me a dream about being shot in the arm in his father s shop. ‘For several hours I could find nothing about the dream. My mind simply wandered. But with help I persisted. Suddenly I seemed to break through, first to seeing how the shop was a place in which I have unconsciously experienced great emotional pain. My father was always criticising. Never a word of encouragement. Then I burst into powerful sobbing as I felt the pain of wanting my father to love me, instead of cnticising all the time, and help me grow into somebody capable of meeting life. And then, something I just had not wanted to see, the 30 years of my life I had wasted by avoiding any contact with authority. My father was the original authority in my life. I had cut off from him because of the lack of support, and I had done the same with school and other authority situations. But what a relief to understand myself, and to meet that young vulnerable boy I used to be. How I loved him and understood him/myself.’ abroad General: your feelings about that country.

ACCIDENTS, ACTION AND ADVENTURES

When you dream that you are the Lara Croft and Indiana Jones of your own adventures, it can be action packed and thrilling; but when you dream that you are in a car or plane crash, the dream can feel rather different.

The traditional interpretation of dreams involving accidents of any kind is that we are receiving some kind of warning to be on our guard against possible danger or hidden aggression, either our own or others’. From a psychologist’s point of view, such dreams may highlight anxieties to do with safety or fear of taking responsibility. Spiritual interpretations of such dreams suggest the need for some kind of intervention from an authoritative source.

According to Freud, accidents in dreams, like slips of the tongue in waking life, are not accidents but dream events with a meaning that can help us to unravel the often incomprehensible maneuvers of our unconscious mind. For Jung, accident dreams, as well as offering insights into our unconscious thought processes, can provide a reaction to a traumatic experience or the fear of it. For example, if you were in a car accident or are anxious about having one, you may dream of being involved in one. People who suffered great trauma, such as rape victims or war veterans, may have nightmares that are exactly like, or very similar to, actual life events.

The most commonly accepted theory is that accident dreams show how your unconscious has noticed things that you may not have noticed in waking life. They are both a reminder and a possible warning. You may, for example, dream of a teenager being knocked down on a busy street outside a petrol station, only to read a few weeks later that a teenager has been seriously injured in just this way. The most likely explanation is that you have unconsciously noticed how dangerous the crossing was, having read somewhere about the growing number of teenagers killed on the roads due to the use of mobile telephones, and without realizing it, you have observed that an accident was highly likely. These kinds of subtle clues and subliminal suggestions are around us every day.

Adventure dreams can be a reflection of your waking life, which may have become more adventurous recently, but it could also suggest the need to experiment, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The Jungian archetype of the hero, starting out on his adventure and battling adversity in order to learn, mature and grow, dominates the interpretation of adventure-themed dreams. Adventure dreams urge the dreamer to take on new challenges or seek out aspects of themselves or talents that remain hidden in waking life. They point the way towards a new understanding, and the discovery of inner strength and creativity that can empower the dreamer.

Finally, activities or actions within dreams are often concerned with hidden motivations and agendas, and, interpreted within the context of your mood and emotions within the dream, are particularly important. The psychological meaning is that action needs to transfer from dreams to waking life in order for progress to be made. Symbolically the action can give an indication of the dreamer’s spiritual progress.

Typically, activities in dreams are associated with moving forward or making progress in waking life. They reflect how well you are doing in your quest to achieve your ambitions. Do you need to move on? Take another route? Speed up or slow down? That’s why it is particularly helpful to take note of the details in your dream. What was the goal you were running, walking, climbing or swimming towards? Did you feel exhausted or were you in peak form? Were you competing against anyone? Did you reach your destination or achieve your goal? Did you feel satisfied or disappointed? The answers to these questions will help you assess your progress and identify any obstacles or attitudes that may be holding you back.... The Element Encyclopedia

ACTING

This can suggest a desire for public attention but it can also suggest not expressing your real self—acting a role.

If you dreamed that you were acting on stage, how did the audience react to your performance? We all role-play during our waking life, projecting a persona that may not be entirely who we are, in order to make ourselves more appealing to others; so it is possible that your unconscious was commenting on how your performance was perceived. The part you were playing and the scene you were acting could be particularly relevant to situations in your waking life. Were you a tremendous success on stage and did you receive a standing ovation? If you did, your unconscious may be telling you that the image you are presenting is convincing to others. If, however, your act was not well received, this might suggest that the image you are projecting is unconvincing to others and unhelpful to you.

If you dreamed that you were unwilling to step into the spotlight, this could suggest that your unconscious is mirroring your reluctance to be someone you are not in waking life, or it could simply suggest that you dislike being the center of attention.

If you forgot your lines or needed the assistance of a prompter, you could be suffering from a lack of confidence in waking life, perhaps because you feel unprepared in some way. You may also be relying on someone else in waking life to guide you towards success.

If an actor or actress dies or is dead in your dream, this could suggest that a particular role you have been playing in life has outlived its usefulness and relevance. On the other hand, dreams about acting may simply be reminding you that life is not a dress rehearsal and that you only have one chance to make a success of it.... The Element Encyclopedia

ACTIVATION-SYNTHESIS MODEL OF DREAMING

The activation-synthesis model of dreaming was proposed in 1977 by Robert McCarley and J. Allan Hobson of Harvard Medical School. Examining the purely physiological correlates of dreaming, Hobson and McCarley believed they had put forward a hypothesis that refuted the notion that dreams are meaningful, especially as this notion was formulated by Sigmund Freud and promulgated in the tradition of dream interpretation he initiated.

During rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage of sleep most closely connected with dreaming, a portion of the brain called the pons (located in the primitive hindbrain) generates electrical signals that go to many different brain areas, including those associated with motor activities, sensory activities, and conscious thought. Hobson and McCarley hypothesized that one of the effects of this electrical activity is to send a series of essentially random images, feelings, and so forth to the higher mental centers of the forebrain. This is the “activation” stage of the theory.

In normal waking consciousness, the fore- brain sorts through various kinds of internal and external sensory input to create a meaningful experience of the world. Faced with a barrage of disconnected inputs during REM sleep, the higher mental centers attempt to impose order on the incoming messages, creating whatever narrative structure dreams have. This is the “synthesis” stage of the theory. Many dreams are just masses of incoherent images representing incoming groups of signals that the brain was simply not able to synthesize.

For anyone who has been exasperated by the convolutions of Freudian or other schools of dream interpretation, the activation-synthesis theory has a certain iconoclastic appeal because it dismisses dreams as just so much nonsense. How- ever, because almost everyone has had at least a few truly insightful dreams, the theory is ultimately unsatisfying. Also, on a purely physiological level, it is an incomplete theory because it does not offer an explanation for the dreams that occur during non-REM sleep.... Dreampedia

ACTIVE / PASSIVE

Example: I was in a house that I lived in many years ago. How I got there I do not know, but I saw myself sitting in an ordinary chair just behind the closed front street door. It was very quiet, and I was afraid, but I did not make any effon to move’ (Mrs J).

When we are an inactive observer in our dream, are all the time on the receiving end of dream action, or as in the example make no effon to move from discomfort, we are in a passive role.

If this occurs frequently in our dreams, we are probably passive in our waking life. This can gradually be changed by such techniques as active imagination.

It is our own emotions, fears and sexuality we are meeting in our dreams, so it is wise to take charge of our being rather than be a victim.

The following dream illustrates an active dreamer: ‘As I walked toward a house a number of demons or devils came at me menacingly, trying to stop me getting near the house. Although they made all the ghostly noises, I wasn’t at all afraid of them. I felt they were a damned nuisance, and to show them I meant business I grabbed one and with my right hand I gripped its flesh and squeezed. It started to squeak in pain and I squeezed harder’ (Clive J). ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

ACTIVE IMAGINATION

Carl Jung several times described a technique for using imagination which allowed the spontaneous expression of the unconscious. Jung described active imagination as a putting aside of conscious criticism while we allow our irrational to play or fantasise. In relationship to a dream, this technique can be extraordinarily helpful and revealing.

A way to learn the technique is to take a dream in which a fairly defined person appears. It can be a child or adult. One then sits in a quiet situation alone, or with a sympathetic listener, and imagines or feels oneself back in the dream. One does not need to develop clear images unless these come easily. Just holding the idea of the dream is often sufficient. Then in a playful way develop a conversation with the dream person. Ask them what they are doing; why they appear in your dream; what do they represent of yourself? With a little practice the dream characters can come to life for you if you can let yourself play or free-wheel a little.

As we learn active imagination, it can give us other ways of entering into the life of our dreams. We can imagine ourself as the dream character, or even as the objects or animals, and allow ourself to experience and speak from their viewpoint. We can enter the dream and carry it forward from where it slopped, imagining what would satisfy us, thus becoming more active in dealing with our own inner and outer life. See dream processing. ... ACTIVE SLEEP

During experiments to monitor the brain activity of animals and humans while asleep, it was noted that the brain seemed to move through a series of levels of activity. In deep sleep there are slow rhythmic brainwaves. These at times would give way to faster rhythms of a more dynamic nature. This was at first called desynchronised’ sleep because during it the muscular system relaxed deeply, even though the brain was active. It was also known as paradoxical sleep, but more recently has become internationally known as ‘active sleep’. During active sleep the rapid eye movements (REM) characteristic of dreaming occur.

The brain’s activity was found to be a better indicator of dreaming in animals than REM because some creatures, such as owls, do not move their eyes. In this way, all mammals were seen to exhibit active sleep or dreaming. Birds also dream, and, measured in this way, so do many types of fish, reptiles and some amphibians. ACTIVITIES AND ENVIRONMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH CHILDHOOD

Dreams about activities and environments associated with childhood can be either motivating or discouraging, depending on the details of your dream and how you felt. For example, if you had a happy time playing with your dolls or a toy train set, your dream may simply be reminding you of the simple pleasure of letting your guard down from time to time to do nothing useful but play and relax. These kinds of dreams are particularly common if you have been extremely busy recently and haven’t had time to have fun. If, however, you were bored by the toy or activity in your dream, your unconscious may be urging you to put away childish things that don’t really give you stimulation and satisfaction, and to spend your time more productively.

Toys in dreams not only reflect your desire for more play, or urge you to grow up in some way, they can also suggest nostalgia for childhood that has been lost. Dolls are especially important because they so resemble the human form, and because children endow them with emotions and characters. Your dreaming mind may therefore use a doll to symbolize something or someone in your life. For example, if you stick needles or pins in the doll, or mistreat it in any way, this can represent negative feelings towards a particular person. Many doll dreams use the doll as a target for violence and, if this is the case, it could also refer to how the dreamer felt as a child when smacked emotionally or physically—like a helpless child. Dolls can also represent emotions that the dreamer would like to discharge on someone else, or the feeling of wanting to be a precious doll to someone. It may also express some undeveloped part of the dreamer’s personality and the need to relearn some childhood lessons we may have forgotten.

If you dreamed that you were in a playground surrounded by other children, were you enjoying yourself or did you feel left out? If you felt exhilarated, your unconscious may once again be signaling your need to have more fun in waking life, but if you felt aloof or alone from the other children, it could suggest that you prefer to play no part in the immature behaviour currently displayed by a group of people in your waking life. ATTRACTION

To dream of being attracted to somebody is usually a reflection of your real-life interest in that person.

If you dream of being attracted to someone who you don’t like “that way” in real life, your dream could be telling you that you are overlooking good qualities in that person. Or, it could mean they have some personality trait (like being confident or fashionable) that you wish you had yourself.

If the person in your dream was a stranger (you don’t know them in real life), your heart is longing for a true love to call your own.... My Dream Interpretation

BACTERIA / GERMS / VIRUS

In dreams, the presence of bacteria, germs and viruses suggest hidden attacks that can weaken or destroy your sense of well-being. They might suggest anxieties about your health or simply reflect a sense of inadequacy in waking life. The word ’germ’ can also be used in its positive sense as the beginning stages of something, the point at which great growth can occur.

If you dream of bacteriological warfare, it suggests the undermining of your personal or social well-being. Any form of infection or virus in a dream might be symbolic of ideas or thoughts that cause irritability or anxiety in waking life, or might be indicating that you are taking in negative attitudes from others to the detriment of yourself. Dreaming of a cactus is usually the indication that you are feeling crowded, or that someone is invading your space, and since the cactus has the prickly spines for defense this represents to the dreamer a wish to establish a boundary and protect your privacy.

The cactus is a negative sign because, like its spines, it reflects the painful moments that the subject is going through. This may be because someone constantly pricks you with her comments or because you need to protect yourself somehow.

Dreaming of a cactus also evidences hardship in the professional setting.

If it is in bloom, however, it announces that finally the value of the sleeper will be recognized at the workplace.

For Mexicans, the cactus is an aphrodisiac, therefore it portends good times in the sentimental field.

Cage

analysis of a dream

Eva dreamed: “I was in a beautiful golden cage, on the edge of a terrace. I had a pretty landscape before my eyes: a green valley full of flowers of every color and very tall mountains on the horizon. The sky was intensely blue and bright. I felt good, safe, and happy in my cage and I sang constantly. From my mouth came beautiful melodies in strange languages.” To see yourself caged in a dream is a sign that the unconscious feels repressed and wants more freedom and freedom of expression. Eva is a very timid person who has a hard time with social interaction. Her dream is reflecting—with the golden cage—her comfortable world closed up in herself, in which she feels safe and sound. This is a calming dream that encouraged her to let her emotions flow freely, like a gentle melody. The idyllic landscape she contemplated through the bars represented the desires Eva could not reach due to her own inhibition. The fact that she sang in unknown languages reveal her inability to communicate with others, and to understand herself.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

FACTS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE A MU’ABBIR INTERPRETS A DREAM

It is imperative that the mu’abbir or interpreter understands fully and properly every details of a dream seen by any person. He should be able to weigh it on the scale of the rules of interpretation.

If the numerous facts emerging from a dream are such that they correspond with each other logically then such a dream will be deemed as a genuine and authentic dream. But if the facts emerging from such a dream are such that they do not correspond with each other then the interpreter should reflect on the apparent meaning of the words. Whichever meaning is nearest to the rules of interpretation, such a meaning should be adopted

If a dream is of a complicated nature so that if cannot be weighed on the scale of the rules of interpretation then such a dream will be deemed as meaningless.

If a certain dream causes the interpreter to become dubious then he should appeal to the conscience of the observer of such a dream: If the dream concerns Salaah, he should question him about Sallah; if it concerns a journey he should question him about the journey; if it concerns marriage, he should question him about marriage. Thereafter, the mu’abbir will interpret to the best of his knowledge

The interpreter should be extremely cautious when interpreting a dream: If the dream evidences obscenity and indecency he should either use pleasant words when interpreting it or simply avoid interpreting it.

It is necessary for a mu’abbir to establish the biological and logical classification of thins and give its interpretation accordingly.

FICTIONAL CHARACTER

It is not uncommon that a real-life obsession with a certain fictional character (or the person who plays that character) may carry over onto your dream world. However, if you dream about a fictional character, this can be an omen that something from your unconscious mind is about to emerge or be revealed. It may also represent memories, images or scenes from your past that were stirred up by reading/watching the movie/book/etc. that featured this fictional character.

FICTIONAL CHARACTER

In dreams, fictional characters that do not exist in everyday life may appear.

For example, you may dream of sharing a birthday party with a twin sister you don’t have in waking life; perhaps a character from your favorite TV show, movie or novel appears in your dreams. All your dreams are connected in some way with your life, so just because these people don’t exist in real life doesn’t mean they are less meaningful in dreamland or have any less resemblance to your waking life. In general, fictional characters exaggerate the qualities found in someone close to you so you can better understand the dynamics of the relationship or situation; one might say that the characters are often one dimensional so that their message is more easily understood. For example, Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies may represent, or highlight, a mean streak that your boss is displaying. And fictional characters can also reflect an aspect of yourself that has relevance to your waking life.

If this is the case, they usually do so to let you know the source of your current problem or to remind you of qualities you didn’t know you had. For example, dreaming about Scarlet O’Hara from Gone with the Wind may remind you that you are tougher and more resilient than you think you are.... The Element Encyclopedia

FRACTIONS

Quarter: Possible interpretations include: showing mercy or pity to a defeated opponent, giving quarter to them; dividing something into any number of smaller units, quartering it; accommodation, abode, living quarters; something that is in close proximity or being engaged in combat, close quarters.

Half: A half of a circle in your dream may represent being diametrically opposed to something.

If the image of half features strongly, it may also indicate lack of thoroughness, doing things by halves or something carried out to an excessive degree e.g. being too clever by half. Another interpretation suggests something that is incomplete, imperfect, having vague intention, not being fully committed to something or having half a mind to do it. Sharing expenses or ‘going halves’ is another possible interpretation. It may also symbolize the number two, as a third might symbolize the number three, fourth four, fifth five, sixth six and so on.... The Element Encyclopedia

PUTREFACTION

1- Putrefaction can represent disintegration. In real-life situations something may have gone wrong, and there is no longer any energy to sustain it. While on a conscious level we mav not recognise this fact, dreams will often bring it to our attention.

2- Decay for example in a relationship can be represented in dreams as putrefaction. When something is happening which will ultimately lead to a total collapse, we can often sense it as a bad smell - something is dying.

3- In spiritual terms there often has to be dissolution and disintegration before there is a new beginning. In dreams, if we have fear of this process it can manifest as putrefaction. Putrefaction can also mean death.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

RECURRING CHARACTER

You may dream of a particular person who appears repeatedly in your dreams. This may be someone you are related to or close to, but it could also be someone you barely know or even someone who is no longer alive. When a recurring character appears in your dream it is often because they are associated with a particular feeling or set of experiences, and even if you no longer keep in touch with that person, they can still appear in your dream when you are affected by types of feelings you had when you knew them. In other words, recurring characters are often pictures of patterns that are operating in your present-day life. Sometimes recurring characters can also represent qualities you possess but are not using, or qualities you admire but do not feel you have. In general, when it comes to recurring characters, if this person is someone you feel positive about they represent qualities you can and should apply to your current life. Those people you associate with painful memories tend to represent feelings and patterns that are affecting you in your current experiences.... The Element Encyclopedia

SPORTING ACTIVITY

Dreams which relate to sporting activities in general are usually positive but they can also reveal your competitive spirit. They should not be taken literally, as they rarely relate to sporting prowess; they are used by your dreaming mind as a metaphor in your waking life to represent your attitude to winning and losing, and how you play the game of life. Whatever your chosen sport, to see yourself winning fairly and cleanly without resorting to cheating is an empowering symbol that should have a positive influence on your waking life. As a dream message, it is important for you to defeat your dream competitors in as honest a way as possible; so dreams of winning by cheating or competing against people who are weaker than you suggest a disheartening struggle ahead, as fair play is a crucial concept for your dreaming mind

A dream of performing on an athletics track may refer to how you feel your performance rates when compared with others in waking life. Are you way ahead of the rest or struggling to keep in the race? Whether you were performing the high jump or throwing a javelin or taking part in a relay in your dream, if you were powerful and successful, your unconscious may have been indicating how successfully and rapidly you are advancing in waking life towards achieving your goals. Dreams that feature running, cycling, skiing and skating may also be commenting on your progress, or lack of it, in waking life. For example, if you dreamed of putting on a pair of skating boots, perhaps your unconscious is urging you to put your skates on and make an extra effort; or perhaps you need to be aware of the metaphorical phrase,‘skating on thin ice’.

If you dreamed of cycling or running down a bumpy road, have you hit a difficult patch in waking life? If you dreamed of skiing down a piste and tumbling headlong down the slope, are you in danger of losing control in waking life? Going down a mountain is a classic Freudian symbol of sexual intercourse but with the added thrills and anxiety implied by skiing. For Jungians, dreams of yachting or regattas may suggest exploration of the unconscious. For Freudians, such dreams recall memories and longings for the mother’s womb.... The Element Encyclopedia
