ape

The meaning of Ape in dream | Dream interpretation

(see Monkey)

The Language of Dreams | Patrica Telesco

A dream of deceit, treacherous friends and associates (Artemidorus); Plato taught that the soul of a bad jester would return as an ape; it is a modern symbol of unclean- ness, lust, cunning, and malice. It was, however, an emblem of wisdom in Egypt and of the god Thoth, patron of the art of writing.

The Fabric of Dream | Katherine Taylor Craig

Instinctual or primitive power, sexuality and strength; amusing antics, mimicking others rather than being yourself. See Animal.

The Dream Books Symbols | Betty Bethards

Be on guard against a mischief-maker in your close social or business circle and pay more attention to your work, if you dreamed of an ape.

See also Animals.

The Complete Guide to Interpreting Your Dreams | Stearn Robinson - Tom Corbett

The character of the ape tends to be gentle, so this dream could symbolize that part of your interior that wants to have a more simple and natural behavior.

If the ape gives you fear, it represents the dark and repressed side of your personality.

This dream denotes that there will be people who deceive you, so you will soon suffer trickery. In business, you should be very cautious with the promises that people make, as they could be false.

If the ape is in a tree, one of your relatives will lie to you which will create large problems in the future.

The Big Dictionary of Dreams | Martha Clarke

Who are you hanging onto that is influencing you negatively? Someone who is not a real friend? If you deserve better believe it with all your being and repattern the old belief that this is all you can have.

1- To dream of apes or monkeys links with the mischievous side of ourselves.

2- We all have within us the ability to mimic or to copy, and to dream of apes may alert us to this ability.

3- The ape suggests the Trickster, the mischievous side of evil.

Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary | Pamela Ball

Dreams of an ape show that you are connecting to your primal feelings, sexuality, power, and perhaps feeling a desire to dominate and express the largess of your being. See Animal.

Unpleasantness and deceit may lurk behind the apparent friendliness of a person close to the dreamer.

Psycho Dream Interpretation | Ella Freeman Sharpe

1. Someone is tricky, mischievous, perhaps trying to fool the dreamer in some way.

2. The dreamer is trying to trick someone else.

3. The desire to imitate someone else.

4. Strength.

New American Dream Dictionary | Joan Seaman - Tom Philbin

As in the case of all unusual animals seen in dreams, this is a warning of coming trouble.

Mystic Dream Book | Internet Archive - Anonymous

Developmental difficulties. Points at the same time to increased rigidity. You need to allow yourself to be more playful and happy. Leave room for the animal side of you (the ape is considered one of the most sexual animals).

The ape is the shadow of the ego, the soul of instinct, the most ancient and most human creature.

It is a symbol of imitation, which points to self- ridicule as well as a lack of autonomy. Pay special attention to the type of ape that appears in the dream.

Little Giant Encyclopedia | Klaus Vollmar

As our closest animal relatives, apes can represent the natural, instinctual wisdom that most of us have lost, particularly if the dream animal is a gray-haired ape. We also sometimes associate simians (especially chimpanzees) with humor, and with the “chained up” animal self inside (e.g., King Kong). “Ape” can also mean to mimic.

Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia | James R. Lewis and Evelyn Dorothy Oliver

As science discovers just how closely associated we are to the ape, it is hardly surprising that over the centuries this creature has had projected upon it aspects of our own character that we find difficult to handle.

The ape in dreams, therefore, can suggest the trickster, the mischievous side of wrongdoing, and irresponsibility. However, in hindu belief the character of hanuman the monkey god teaches us of the unlimited power that lies unused within each one of us.

Dream Meanings of Versatile | Versatile - Anonymous

Psychological / emotional perspective: One of the qualities of the ape is its ability to mimic, to copy and to learn by experience.

To dream of apes may alert us to this ability, or for the need for us to learn by example.

Material aspects: Traditionally, to dream of apes or monkeys links with the mischievous side of ourselves. However, as perception changes, the symbolism is more of natural intelligence. Also consult the entry for monkey in animals for further information.

Unlike a monkey, an ape is figurative of a person who goes “ape”, acting wild or crazy

Dream Dictionary Unlimited | Margaret Hamilton

A symbol of an overly emotional or beastly person

Christian Dream Symbols | Tyler Wolfe

Can represent a world of experience human beings have lost and feel sorrow at its absence. In developing self consciousness, with its labyrinth of ideas and decisions, humans lost a sense of oneness with life around them. Animals have enormous remembered wisdom; remembered through instincts and complex social codes. This wisdom is still accessible to humans who can listen to the unconscious, and discover the enormous wealth of information they have about such things as social behaviour and body language.

The ape can depict this wisdom, especially if it is white haired. Or it might show the personal folly of trying to let instincts dominate us now we have self awareness. Idioms: he is just aping.

APE / MONKEY

To dream of apes, monkeys, gorillas or baboons suggests a link with the impulsive, imprudent, inquisitive side of ourselves, such as the self-centred grabbing of food, or sexual gratification without concern for the needs of the other person. It can also suggest the ability to mimic or copy, as well the childish, foolish and infantile side of the dreamer’s character that delights in mischief-making.

On the other hand, to dream of apes or monkeys, especially if they are white haired, can link in with the dreamer’s own unconscious wisdom: the wonderful experience of existing, of being alive with all the powers of a living creature such as strength, passion, awe and wonder in meeting life and the stars. Does your dream monkey reveal a wider side of you? The three mystic monkeys cover their eyes, ears and mouth showing that they ‘see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil’. CHURCH, CHAPEL, TEMPLE

Example: ‘It was like an English church with several great spires.

The whole building seemed to be built in a white and gold design.

The gold pans shimmered in the sun. I gazed at this wonderful sight for some time and felt such a wonderful feeling of upliftment, my tiredness gone’ (Johan E). As in the example, the powerfully regenerative side of our inner life or feelings; the world of experience we have created inwardly by our thoughts, meditation, actions; our sense of contact with life itself. Also the moral rules we make decisions from (such rules may not be ‘Christian’ if they kill much of our inner life); moral authority, our relationship with the community. Occasionally baptism, marriage, death, the mother or refuge.

Walking past church: not entering into contact with the best in us—or our anger towards dogma. Example: The priest was going to question and assault my friend in connection with some opinion he had offended the church with. I went to stand near him to give him moral suppon, and physical help if necessary. I hated seeing anybody degraded.

The priest saw my move and sent three thug type men to shoulder me out. They surrounded me to knock me down. I went beserk and knocked them all over the place with kicks and punches’ (John P). In the example John sees the dogmas of the Church as an assault and degradation of human qualities of love and moral suppon. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

CITYSCAPE

Did you dream that you were wandering around a city, either familiar or unfamiliar to you in waking life? If you did, were the streets friendly and welcoming, and the buildings clean and bursting with life and activity, or did you feel unwelcome, jostled about and intimidated by the place? According to Jung, places in dreams where people group together to live and work, such as cities, towns and villages, refer to how you perceive yourself within the community, and how well you are fitting in. So if you dreamed that you felt happy and secure in your dream city, the chances are you relate well to other members of the community in waking life. But if the buildings on the sidewalk or pavement seemed to close in on you, or you were wandering around hopelessly lost, perhaps you are feeling intimidated by others in waking life and have lost your sense of direction, or even identity.

If the city was abandoned like a ghost town, does this mirror your feelings of isolation in waking life?... The Element Encyclopedia

(Cover; Happiness; Fears; Veil) In a dream, drapes means veiling one’s private life. Drapes in a dream also represent a confidant or a trustworthy friend or a wife who covers the pitfalls of her husband, protects his business and guards him from looking at other women. Ifa man of knowledge sees such a dream, then drapes represent his integrity, his honorable wife and children. Unidentified drapes in a dream represent worries or distress. Ifthe drapes are hanging over one’s front door in the dream, it means that such difficulties will come from the world. Old drapes in a dream represent adversities which will not last. Torn drapes in a dream mean happiness and joy.

If they are torn vertically in the dream, they represent a quick joy.

If they are torn horizontally in the dream, they mean slander against one’s family. Black drapes in a dream mean worries because of money, a child, or the authorities. White or green drapes mean good results. Drapes hanging over the door of a mosque in a dream represent spiritual problems or religious failure. Seeing drapes out of their place in a dream mean adversities, and seeing them hanging over one’s windows has no interpretation. In a dream, seeing drapes hanging over a strange environment means fears which will culminate in satisfaction. Drapes adorned with gold means hallucination or dispelling one’s worries.

If an unmarried person sees drapes in his dream, it means that he will get married and protect his chastity, or it could mean a business that will shelter him from poverty.

If a fugitive or a scared person sees himself covered with drapes in a dream, it means a shelter from what scares him. Falling through a hole while hanging to a drape in a dream means taking a long, frustrating, toiling and a distant journey.

Example: I dreamt I was a prisoner with many others. Myself and other men were outside the prison working. Then a tremendous explosion blew a hole in the prison wall. I knew prisoners were trying to escape. I saw some wardens and shouted or signalled to the prisoners to be care- fiiT (Terry D). Terry worked as a therapist without scholastic qualification. Terry represents his attitudes to authority as the prison, and sees more of his work potential escaping those attitudes.

Are you running away from part of yourself? You might have good reason for it! However, in a dream, escaping is a sign that whatever you are running from wants to be understood and accepted— otherwise, it would not appear in a dream. Whenever you are fleeing, you are also looking for something. Ask yourself what your goals are.... Little Giant Encyclopedia

GRAPE

(see Fruit, Vine, Wine)

Eating grapes is supposed to increase the frequency of oracular dreams. Alternatively, according to folklore, eating grapes or raisins aids concentration and conscious alertness. In a dream this may mean improved prophetic abilities or an increased need to focus on studious matters, respectively.

Fertility.

The abundance of grapes on the vine shows that the positive energy put toward your goals will reap rewards.

Fortitude shared with those around you. In a garden, grapes strengthen the hardiness of most nearby plants.

An emblem equated with Bacchus or Dionysus, both of whom had rather roguish natures, being fond of wine, song, and laughter.

For the dreamer, this can reflect more social times or an improved sense of well-being accompanied by playfulness.

If the grapes are tart, this reflects a similarly caustic attitude (e.g., being full of “sour grapes”).... The Language of Dreams

Grapes are a symbol of sexual pleasure, being a fruit that is meant to be shared with a lover or placed in another’s mouth. Grapes therefore express sexuality in all its erotic joy.

If the grapes are sour in your dreams, this can suggest disgust or displeasure. Given its origin from grapes, wine is a dream symbol of the free spirit—the sense of intoxication can allow the dream to rise above the mundane. To see grapevines in your dream is a symbol of opulence, wealth and decadence. To see or eat grapes in your dream, represents sexuality but they can also represent wealth and prosperity. To dream that you are picking and gathering grapes may signify profit and the realization of your desires. General Meaning: A picture of prosperity and abundance.

Positive: Grapes were always used in scripture as a picture of God’s prosperity. When • the spies went into the Promised Land, they brought back a huge bunch of grapes to show the fertility of the land and its treasures.

(Num 13:24) • Grapes are only as good as the soil they are grown in.

If the soil is good, then the fruit will be good as well.

• To dream of ripe grapes means that your spiritual life is in order and that the fruit of your spirit is good.

• It also means that your feet are planted in the right place now and that the Lord is going to bless you in this land that He has given you. This can speak of your ministry or of your business and financial land.

Negative: On the other hand, sour grapes have a number of meanings. Firstly it means that what is coming out of you is not pleasant.

• It means that the land that you are in right now (be it spiritual or natural) is not right and it is producing sour grapes.

• Jeremiah 31:30 But every one will die for his own iniquity: every man that eats the sour grape, his teeth will be set on edge.

• Although you were expecting prosperity or blessing, you are getting quite the opposite.

• This is a warning dream or vision and the Lord is telling you that where you are right now in your spiritual life is not good. There is contamination present through sin.

LANDSCAPE

The landscapes of dreams are symbolic scenarios in which each and every one of the elements that comprise it should be considered. For example, for a person overwhelmed by financial problems, a mountain ridge can mean a profit chart and economic losses. Now, to understand the symbolic meaning of a landscape you must distinguish the predominant features from the minor ones. So, when an element reigns above all others and unifies them (sea, desert, etc.), you must interpret the dream in terms of this main component. But if, instead, the landscape offers variety and balance of different elements, then it must be analyzed as if it were a painting, paying attention to the shapes of objects (flat, pointed, round, etc.) and the colors that stand out.

Lasso The meaning of the symbol varies depending on the type of lasso.

LANDSCAPES

The landscape in a dream can be an integral part of the interpretation. It usually mirrors feelings and concepts that we have and therefore reflects our personality.

A rocky landscape would suggest problems, whereas a gloomy landscape might suggest pessimism and self-doubt.

A recurring scene may be one where in childhood we felt safe, or may reflect a feeling or difficulty with which we have not been able to come to terms. Landscapes do tend to reflect habitual feelings rather than momcntarv moods.

Dream landscapes can have a bizarre quality about them in order to highlight a particular message.

For instance, there may be trees made of ice, or rocks made of sugar.

The plot of the dream may be important in arriving at the correct interpretation of these symbols (see Introduction).

The landscape in a dream can also indicate how we relate to other people.

To be in a desert might represent loneliness, whereas to be in a jungle might represent a very fertile imagination.

LANDSCAPES AND SETTINGS

When the setting of your dream is particularly prominent in your dream, it is usually trying to convey to you some kind of message from your unconscious. The setting of a dream is the environment or landscape in which the action takes place. Sometimes the place reflects your mood but it can also be a reminder of a particular time in your life or of particular people. In general, the setting signifies the environment in which the main action of your life is happening. For example, if you dream of walking across the road in a busy city in the rain, your dream has a completely different setting to going for a walk in a park on a sunny day.

Try to assign a feeling and function to the setting of your dreamscape; that busy city might convey the feeling of purpose and speed, together with the function of work; that park might suggest the feeling of relaxation and the function of refreshment. When you have defined your feeling and function, try to see what part they play in your waking life and what the other details of the dream say about them.

Bear in mind, too, that you need to consider personal associations. A countryside walk may conjure up an image of heaven for some people but of hell for others, particularly if they suffer from severe hay fever.

Interpreting the symbolism of the dream setting can give you an insight into your own inner landscape.

If the setting is familiar, look out for symbols of your work or home situation to decide whether the dream is about your professional or personal life. Such a scene may also take you back to childhood or a time of learning.

If the setting is not familiar, or from your past, think about how it may relate to the emotional climate of a current situation. Recurring landscapes in dreams indicate feelings to which you often return; if the same scenes recur, they suggest habitual attitudes with which you approach a situation. Recurring scenes of your past represent a stance you developed at that time in your life. Although landscapes do tend to reflect habitual feelings rather than temporary moods, if the landscape does change in your dream, perhaps you need to make corresponding changes in your everyday life or in your approach to life. Composite scenes, consisting of many images that you recognize in one setting, are usually drawing your attention to particular qualities or moods which have relevance to the content of the dream. The country where your dream is set may also have significance. See also FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

Bear in mind, too, that the light, the weather and other features of your dream landscape all contribute to the setting and are all saying something about your mood or the feelings the dream inspires. Light is a common symbol of consciousness, so a sunny landscape will indicate clarity and awareness and a bright and sunny place will suggest fun and liveliness. Dark places in general represent the unconscious, although landscapes that become dark or dreary during the course of the dream may also refer to your subjective view of the world; for example, a dark shadowy murky scene signifies feelings of depression. A place that becomes lighter and brighter during your dream suggests possibilities and potentials, whilst the dim illumination of moonlight is a common symbol of intuition.

The nature of the weather in your dream will also express how you are feeling. Bad weather may foretell of troubles lying ahead, rain falling may indicate a release of tension, whilst the appearance of a rainbow across the landscape might suggest your troubles have found some sort of resolution. A beautiful place in a dream may be encouraging you to use your creative imagination in waking life, a sheltered place might be offering peace and security, unknown places could be revealing aspects of yourself of which you may be unsure and wide open spaces offer you a taste of freedom from confinement, whether emotional or physical.

The structure of the landscape also reflects your feelings about the content of your dream. A landscape that is hard to travel over or live in says much about the emotional or practical obstacles in your waking life. Your dream may have created a symbolic scenario to show you the things that are preventing you from being happy and fulfilled.

What you see lying ahead of you in a dream, such as a mountain or a flight of stairs, is significant as it represents the challenges you have yet to face. Obstacles in dream landscapes may express your everyday concerns. For example, you may find it impossible to cross a busy street in your dream; the street may well be a symbol of an impending exam.

If some aspect of your dream landscape did not seem right or was out of proportion, perhaps you are not seeing things straight in waking life. In your dream, look out for other symbols that suggest some aspect of your waking life is out of proportion; if your dream has a surreal or supernatural elements, refer to the chapter on SURREALISM AND FANTASY.... Vision: Reading a newspaper means you will receive interesting news—but who should you believe (everybody is saying something different)? Seeing a newspaper (without reading it): you pay little attention to what is going on around you—but be less cavalier, more observant. Seeing your name in the paper: watch out—someone is determined to wreck your reputation. See Leaf, Name, Paper.

Depth Psychology: A newspaper represents things we don’t know. However, information in newspapers is not always clear; it presents different opinions. NEWSPAPER / MAGAZINE

These, like books, are symbols of information and knowledge but because their contents are more temporary and disposable, they don’t tend to share the symbolism of wisdom with books. The main function of newspapers in waking life is to keep you informed and that is why they can have the same meaning as radio or news bulletins. So if you dreamed of passing a news stand and seeing a headline, the message of that headline may have personal significance for you. If, on the other hand, you dreamed of scanning the newspaper for a news item or advertizement, this may indicate your anticipation or desire to hear some kind of news or result in waking life. Alternatively a dream in which you are flipping through a magazine may suggest that you have become bored with your life and that you are looking for stimulation.

If you remember pausing over a specific article in your dream, perhaps your unconscious is urging you to consider its message or to take time out of your routine to enjoy yourself.

Another interpretation would be that your dreaming mind is urging you to update your knowledge or outlook on life and learn more about the opinions of other people.... The Element Encyclopedia

PAPER

(Notebook; Record; Parchment) A sheet of paper in a dream represents an oath, a vow, or a pledge. Writing a note on a piece of paper in a dream means being ungrateful and perfidious toward others.

A writer in a dream also represents someone who is burdened, pressured, doubtful and uncertain, whereby, writing has become his escape goat and a way out of his depression. Ifone’s boss gives him a paper to write somethingon it in a dream, it means that he will solicit something from his boss and eventually receive it.

If one feels uncertain about some people then sees himself holding a pen and a piece of paper in a dream, it means that his obscurity will be replaced with clarity. Holding a piece of paper in a dream also means attaining one’s goal, or completing a project, or finalizing a program. This is a symbol for the potential for communication, creative expression, the making of plans, or committing an idea to something permanent by putting it on paper. Writing on paper connects to a need to gain clarity with your thoughts. Reading something written on paper is about attempting to absorb some new idea as an intrinsic part of your knowledge base. Folding a piece of paper might reveal a wish to keep something hidden from others or possibly to break something down into more manageable pieces of information. Doing something atypical with paper, such as origami or cutouts, could connect to being creative in a rebellious fashion. Blank paper might point to the requirement of definitive communication that you are not clear about or unwilling to commit to yet. Reams and reams of paper could align with an overwhelming sense of thoughts or feelings that need to be documented in some way. PAPERS

(Books; Credentials; Letter; Newspaper; Records; Revelations; Scrolls; Studies) Papers in a dream represent witnesses, guidance, spiritual leaders, knowledge, warnings, or glad tidings. Holding papers in a dream means glad tidings and celebration. Ifa woman hands someone a piece of paper in a dream, then one may expect good news to arrive from one moment to another.

If the woman who hands him the paper covers herself with a veil in the dream, it means that he should be careful. Carrying a folded piece of paper in a dream means that one may have an accident that could be the cause of his death. Ifone sees himselfcarrying a paper in his left hand in a dream, it means that he regrets something he did. Writing a paper with the left hand in a dream means writing poem, or committing abominable actions, or that one will beget a son from adultery.

If a God fearing person sees himself looking at a paper written in a language he cannot decipher in a dream, it means that he will face humiliation or suffer from distress. Ifone is offered a wrapping paper and he finds a newborn baby wrapped inside it in a dream, it means that he will hire a servant with some strings attached to his employment. Ifone is given a newspaper, or a document but does not care to read it in his dream, it means that he may receive an inheritance.

If one reads the title page of a newspaper in a dream, it also means that he may receive an inheritance.

If he quickly browses through it in his dream, then it means debts.

To see one’s records of the Day of Judgment open before his own eyes in a dream, it denotes his faith, certitude, lack of doubt and true belief in what God’s Messenger, upon whom be peace, brought from his Lord.

RAPE

Dreaming about being raped is a nightmare that inflicts fear and anxiety upon recall. Since rape is a brutal and deeply personal violation, it suggests that the dreamer may be feeling robbed of options and negated as a human being. In a dream, as in real life, rape have very little to do with sex.

It is about power, control, anger, and other very destructive emotions. In order to understand this dream, you may need to think about the areas of your life that causes you great anxiety and fear.

If you are superstitious, take this dream as a warning. Take precautions, protect yourself emotionally and physically and don’t engage in careless behaviors.

RAPE

Example: \ tried to turn but my legs were like lead.

The man caught me and I fought. He tried to rape me but couldn’t do it. As I talked to him I began to feel sorry for him and not frightened. I realised that inside he was a nice person. In the end I found I liked him so much I began to kiss him myself (Mrs JB). Rape in dreams is very different from rape in real life, as we create our own dream, so why introduce rape? Perhaps in the above example Mrs JB discovers her own power in the situation as she realises the weakness of the male.

Example: A man is trying to make love and at the last moment I repel him as I know it will cause a pregnancy. When I was about 10 I was raped and for many years had a fear of men’ (Anon.). This is the other side of rape. Rape in this dream may be memories, the effects of which are still visible in the life of this dreamer, causing her difficulties in warm sexuality.

Example: The devil attacked a woman. He was invisible.

The woman turned black as he raped her. She didn’t die. At this point I woke and went to the toiler. On returning to bed I continued the dream, particularly wondenng what I was in conflict with in the image of the devil. I found it disturbinr and frightening to be confronted by such a powerful opponent. Partly because of the rape, I realised it was repressed sexuality. I then approached the “black” woman with tenderness and this transformed the devil into available sexual or emotional energy. I tried this again and again. Each time it worked, and I could observe the devil was my sexual warmth and love which had become negative through restraint’ (Neil V). In this male dream, it is the conflict with his sexuality which causes the devilish’ rape. When he can find tenderness, the negative aspect disappears. Rape also depicts the real evil of another person disregarding our personal needs and feelings, abusing not only the body, but particularly the ‘person’. Being raped by someone known: feeling anxious about sex with them, fighting off desire for them. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

RAPE

Rape in a dream is a positive symbol even though the association with it is very negative because of its abhorrent nature from waking life. Sex is ultimately about integration and the bringing together of aspects of personality. This is true in the world of symbolism even when the act is forceful and violent. Because rape is an act of violence, this, combined with the absence of consent, puts a very different spin on how to interpret it if it should appear in a dream. When a dream includes something as heinous as rape, it is important to remind yourself that dreams are symbolic, not literal. Rape in a dream is not like rape in life. It simply means that the integration that is occurring within your psyche is being experienced as so abrupt and potentially frightening that the symbolic expression of it appears dramatically.

The unconscious will often use nightmares and frightening dreams to get our attention.

If you were raped in the dream, consider the rapist.

If the person was known to you, then use that individual as a character aspect to see what part of your own personality is demanding to be dealt with.

If the person was not known to you, then consider the dream a precursor to a powerful shift that is going on under the surface and is not yet clear.

If you cannot glean more helpful insight from this dream, trust that future dreams will inform you of whatever shift is taking place.

If you witnessed a rape, you must look inward to see what aspects of your personality are at odds with one another, for they ultimately need to be integrated and made whole.

The rapist would be the part of you that is demanding to be recognized, and the victim is the part of you that needs to accept the merging, but may be in resistance to the process.

If you were the rapist in your dream, consider the victim as a character aspect that represents the part of you that you wish to subdue. Rape fantasies are common for many people and can be quite erotic and satisfying when handled in an appropriate manner.

If the dream of rape was erotic in nature, the meaning is the same, but the integration that is taking place has much lower stakes and may in fact be a source of pleasurable anticipation.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

RAPE

A dream of rape can be incredibly disturbing and you are unlikely to want to dwell on it, but it might be worth your while to ask yourself why your dreaming mind would put you through such an ordeal.

If you have been a victim of sexual violence, then your dream may have been trying to resolve your feelings about the trauma.

If this isn’t the case, however, your dream may have been warning you about a predatory person in your life or warning you about someone in your life who is forcing you to do something against your will.

Whether you are raped by a person of the same or the opposite sex in your dream, the images reinforce your feelings of powerlessness and shame at having to bend to (non-sexual) demands in waking life. Your dreaming mind may have sent you this shocking image to encourage you to assert yourself and fight back.

If you are raping someone else in your dream, this expresses your desire to humiliate or put someone in their place in waking life.

If you witnessed someone else being raped in your dream but could not or would not prevent it, the message is again one of powerlessness and your feelings of frustration at being unable to right a wrong in waking life, or protect someone who is vulnerable. SCAPEGOAT

The word scapegoat actually comes from the sacrificing of a goat to appease the gods, and in dreams this symbol can be highly relevant.

If in our dream we are the scapegoat for someone else’s action then we are being turned into a victim. Other people maybe trying to make us pay for their misdcmcanours.

If we are making another person a scapegoat then this indicates a blame shift, and that we are not taking responsibility for our own actions.

Often in families and teams one member takes the brunt of all the projections from the rest of the family or group. He (or she) is continually belittled or laughed at. and can be blamed for all sorts of things which are not their fault. They become the scapegoat. In dreams, however, there is recognition that there is an aspect of cooperation and collaboration in the dreamer. We need to do something to redress the balance, and often the solution can only come from us.

SHAPES

It is very common for shapes and patterns of all sorts to appear in your dreams.

You may not realize how often shapes and patterns appear in your dreams but if you were reading a book you were holding a rectangle; if you paid someone a coin, you were using a circle and so on. Whether they are dots, spirals, circles, crescents, stars, triangles, squares or crosses, shapes and patterns are just as much an everyday part of your dream world as they are a part of the real world, although when they feature in dreams their significance can be heightened. This is because shapes and patterns are considered to be amongst the most ancient and powerful of archetypal symbols, and, according to Jung, they can reflect the very structure of your mind.

From the very beginnings of humankind when our ancestors first recognized that the moon often became a crescent and that the sun was a circle, the human mind has been conditioned to read meaning into shapes and patterns. In much the same way as absent-minded doodling can reveal information about your unconscious mind, many modern dream analysts believe that shapes and patterns in dreams are a visual presentation of your psychological state or inner world. Bear in mind that the number of sides the shape has, as well as its color, will be important to any interpretation. See also COLORS; NUMBERS; SYMBOLS.

SHAPES / PATTERNS

1- The number of sides the shape has will be significant (See Numbers), as will the colours (See Colours). At a certain stage of development the geometric shapes which will give the individual a greater understanding of the abstract world begin to appear in dreams.

It is as though the old perception of form is beginning to take on a new- meaning and interpretation.

2- The dreamer accepts the nature of things as they are, and can look at the fundamental structure of his nature. He can appreciate the basic shape his life is taking without placing emotional inhibitions in the way.

3- Various shapes and patterns can be interpreted as:

The Centre The centre symbolises the point from which everything starts. In relation to shape, il Ls the point from which the pattern grows. Circle The circle represents the inner being or the Self (see Introduction).

It is also unity and perfection.

A circular object such as a ring may have the same meaning as the circle.

A circle with a dot in the centre can signify the soul in completion.

It is sometimes taken to represent Woman.

Crescent (including the sickle and crescent moon) This signifies the feminine, mysterious power which is intuitive and non-rational. Cross Any cross stands for the realisation (in the sense of making real) of spirit into matter. Moving through the symbol of the sword to the equal armed-cross, from there to the cross of suffering and crucifixion, and finally to the Tau of perfection, the soul learns through experience to overcome the obstacles to spiritual progression.

The four arms pointing in opposite directions signify conflict, anguish and distress, but ultimately going through these to reach perfection.

The hung cross with the figure of Christ represents the sacrifice of self for others.

The intersection signifies the reconciliation of opposites.

The three upper arms are said to stand for God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, but more property thcv indicate any Divine Trinity.

Cube

see Square Diamond A diamond in a dream indicates that we have greater and lesser options available. Hexagram A hexagram is a geometric figure which symbolises the harmonious development of the physical, social and spiritual elements of human life and its integration into a perfect whole. Oval The oval is symbolic of the womb, and also of feminine life. Called the Vesica Piscis, it is the halo which completely encircles a sacred figure.

Patterns (in cloth, mosaic etc.) In dreams the patterns which appear as part of the scenario can categorise how we handle the patterns and perhaps repeated behaviours in our lives. Pent a gram / Pent angle / Pentagram - see Star Sphere The sphere has a similar meaning to the globe (see individual entry), and indicates perfection and completion of all possibilities. Spiral (also see labyrinth in L Section) The spiral is the perfect path to evolution.

The principle is that everything is continually in motion, but also continually rising or raising its vibration.

If the spiral is towards the centre we are approaching our own centre by an indirect route.

A clockwise spiral, moving outward to the right is a movement towards consciousness and enlightenment.

If counterclockwise the movement is towards the unconscious, probably regressive behaviour. There is also a connection with the navel or solar plexus as the centre of power. Square or Cube The square or cube signifies the manifestation of spirit into matter. It represents the earthly realm as opposed to the heavens.

A square within a circle suggests the act of ‘becoming’ or taking on form.

The figure within a square is the Self or perfect Man. Any square object signifies the enclosing and feminine principle. Star The star, particularly if it is a bright one, indicates the individual’s hopes, aspirations and ideals.

It is those things we must reach for.

The five-pointed star or pentagram evokes personal magic, and all matter in harmony.

To be correct, the star should point upwards. In dreams it signifies the dreamer’s ownership of his own magical qualities and aspirations.

If it is pointing downwards it symbolises evil and witchcraft.

The six- pointed star, or Star of David, is made up of one triangle pointing upward and another pointing downward: the physical and the spiritual arc joined together in harmony to create wisdom. Twelve stars signify both the Twelve Tribes of Israel and the Apostles. Swastika The swastika with its arms moving clockwise portrays Ideal Man and the power lie has for good. In Eastern symbolism it signifies the movement of the sun.

The swastika moving counter-clockwise in this form signifies all that is sinister and wrong. It was always recognised that Hitler had connections with magic.

It is not known whether his choice of swastika was deliberate or not.

Triangle The triangle represents Standing Man, with his three parts body; mind and spirit (or being). Consciousness and love manifest through his physicality. There is potential still to be realised.

If the triangle points upwards, human nature moves towards the Divine.

If it is pointing down it is spirit seeking expression through the physical.

The triangle can also represent family relationships that is, father, mother and child. There is a game based on shapes in which you draw a square, a circle and a triangle, and then get someone else to elaborate each of the basic shapes into a drawing. Whatever he makes of the square is supposed to relate to his outlook on the world, the circle to his inner being and the triangle to his sex life.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

This image indicates expansion to higher levels of conscious awareness. Any building is a reflection of the consciousness of human beings.

If a house in a dream symbolizes your personal sense of self, each successively larger building can be thought of as an expansion of this consciousness. In this way, a skyscraper is the ultimate expression of human consciousness, reaching from the ground to the heavens.

The skyscraper is also a very American icon and is directly connected to the explosion of urbanization that marked the movement into the current modern era. When steel began to be mass-produced, it paved the way for the bustling city environment to push upward.
