The dreams in which authority appears symbolize the degree of repression of the dreamer. Almost always, they indicate the existence of a conflict. (See STABBING and MURDER)... The Big Dictionary of Dreams
Most of us typically rebel against authority at some time in our lives but when authority figures appear in your dreams as themselves or as archetypal figures, they command our attention and respect, and remind us to behave responsibly. Your concept of authority is most likely to have developed through your relationship with your parents in early life and depending on how you were treated by them, your view of authority will either be of an inspirational helper or a judgmental disciplinarian. In dreams, authority figures will therefore appear for several reasons. One reason may be to act as a voice of conscience, rebuking you for wrong thoughts or actions, and attempting to lead you back to what is expected of you. Another may be to advise or help you decide on the best course of action. A third is to remind you of your duty to be fair and kind to yourself and to others.... The Element Encyclopedia
Our concept of authority first develops through our relationship with our father or father figure. Depending on how we were treated as children, our view of authority will be anything from a benign helper to an exploitative disciplinarian. Most authority figures will ultimately lead us back to what is right for us, although not necessarily what we might consider good for us. Authority figures in dreams initially appear to have power over us, though – if we are able to work with them properly – will generate within us the power to succeed.... Dream Meanings of Versatile
Something in your life is creating a fear-based response to a threat. That threat may be real or imagined. When a person feels exposed at a very primal level, the built-in survival mechanism of the fight-or-flight response occurs. You may be running in terror without knowing that the secret enemy you are running from is yourself.
If you do not know your assailant, it may simply be you trying to catch up to you with something important that, if embraced, would allow you to feel more complete.
If you know who is chasing you, the person may have more to offer you if you let him or her catch you. Even if being caught ends in being killed, that death could be a symbolic transformation of such significance as to be the very thing needed to bring your greatest heart’s desires into reality. That is, of course, if you have the courage to stop running and turn around. Sometimes it is part of human nature to be afraid of success, and a dream of being chased is alerting you to stop running from your own magnificence.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams
The way we respond to anxiety and pressure in real life is typically manifested as a chase dream. Often in these dream scenarios, you are being pursued by some attacker who wants to hurt or possibly kill you. You may be running away, hiding, or trying to outwit your pursuer. Chase dreams may represent your way of coping with fears, stress or various situations in your waking life.
Instead of confronting the situation, you are running away and avoiding it. Ask yourself, who is the one chasing you, and you may gain some understanding and insight on the source of your fears. The dream could also indicate that you are refusing to acknowledge a certain viewpoint or idea. On the other hand, the pursuer or attacker who is chasing you in your dream may represent a part of yourself. Your own feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, and possibly love, can assume the appearance of a threatening figure. You may be projecting these feelings onto the unknown chaser and your dream is calling your attention to your own self-destructive actions. A more direct analysis of chase dreams is that they reflect the simple fear of being attacked. Media hype and overexposure play on this fear and magnify our level of risk.... The Element Encyclopedia
The most common type of nightmare or bad dream is the one in which you are being chased or hunted down by something or someone. According to Jung, being chased or stalked as prey is a primal memory of your human collective unconscious and may refer to early times in the history of humankind when it was common to be chased, often to the death, by an animal.
If you are being chased in your dream it is important to think about who or what was chasing you, and then ask yourself whether there is anyone or anything in your life that reminds you of your pursuer.... The Element Encyclopedia
Folklore interpretations say that if you are looking at a chase or participating in it, you will have a comfortable old age. Although this may be comforting, there is a more realistic understanding of this activity in a dream.
If you are being chased, maybe you are running away from or trying to escape those things that are frightening and unpleasant (possibly your own habits and negative behaviors).
If you are doing the chasing, it may be that you are expressing some aggressive feelings toward others or are pursuing a very difficult goal. On the deepest level, if a stranger is chasing you it may represent your chasing a part of yourself, the unconscious attempts to catch up with the conscious in order for you to become more aware of yourself and your own multidimensional nature.... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Material aspects: Dreaming of being chased or of trying to escape is perhaps one of the most common dreams; usually we are trying to escape responsibility, our own sense of failure, fear or emotions we can’t handle.... Dream Meanings of Versatile
(1) If you are being chased in a dream, what is chasing you probably symbolizes something you are afraid of, either in your external life or - more commonly - in your inner self, your unconscious. For example, a woman who dreams of being chased by men is probably afraid of sex. (Freud would add that her dreams present, in disguise, an unconscious, repressed desire for sex.)
(2) If you are doing the chasing, the ‘you’ in your dream is probably your conscious ego and the thing you are chasing is almost certainly some part of yourself that frightens you. Chasing it away means disowning it, banishing it from your conscious life. It might be much better to try to integrate it into your conscious life. At the very least, get to know it and understand it.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols
To dream of being chased is symbolic of being pursued by a spiritual or physical enemy, Deut. 1:44. If you are being chased by authority figures like police officers, school principals, or other adults, it may symbolize a problem with submitting yourself to authority... Christian Dream Symbols
Example: Three men with clubs were chasing me, but never actually caught me as I woke in terror. I was determined to tell myself it was only a dream, and the next night as they were chasing me I remembered it was only a dream and lost all fear—stopped running—turned to face them and said This is only a dream, you can’t hurt me.” As they came closer they faded into nothing and I never saw them again’ (Account of dreams when six years old. Mr C).
The example shows how we can be pursued by fears or emotions, and can either continue to avoid them or face them. We are, in a real sense, pursued by what we have created with our thoughts, emotions, action and inaction. What we are avoiding might be sexual feelings; responsibility; expressing what we really feel in public; our fear of death; sense of failure; guilt; emotional pain; grief, etc. We can never escape from ourself, so such feelings may pursue us through life unless we meet them.
Chased by opposite sex: afraid of love or sex, haunted by a past relationship. By animal: one’s passions; anger, natural feelings. By Thing or shadowy creature: usually past experience or trauma, a hurt from childhood. Chasing: something you are pursuing in life; something or someone you want; aggression. See follow. ... The origin of dreams of being chased or attacked probably dates back to an era when humans fought off beasts or other tribal members to survive. The ‘monsters’ of today are more likely to be emotional beasts, such as fear, anxiety, anger, hatred and envy, or the pressures put upon us by the fast pace of life. In these dream scenarios you are often being pursued by some attacker who wants to hurt or possibly kill you. Chase dreams may represent your way of coping with fears, stresses or various difficult situations in your waking life. Instead of confronting the situation, you are running away and avoiding it. Vision: If you are chasing someone: you can’t make up for an old mistake.
If you are being chased: someone who has wronged you wants to make amends. In a man’s dream, being chased means he has not yet come to terms with the sexual prohibitions of his childhood. Unconsciously he still believes that sexuality is disgusting and is afraid of being punished.

Priests, rabbis, popes, cardinals, priestesses, lamas, gurus, yogis, Jedi knights, monks, mullahs, nuns and curates are all symbols of spiritual authority in dreams and in some cases they represent your own spiritual wisdom. The key to interpreting their appearance in a dream is the message or feeling they convey to you.
If you were uneasy because the message was an unwelcome reminder of a duty you have neglected, your dreaming mind may be urging you to take positive action that will transform your spiritual well-being. Such figures may also stand for parental disapproval or advice; perhaps you are yearning for some moral certainties and direction in your waking life. According to ancient dream-lore, any dream concerning a priest is a fortunate one. In particular, it means the end of a quarrel.... The Element Encyclopedia
Hiding from or being trapped by animals can suggest you are feeling controlled or threatened by your urges or the emotions or feelings of others.
If the animal is watching you, your unconscious is reminding you not to forget or neglect the instincts that it represents.
If the animal is attacking you, this could indicate that you are in the grip of a rage that you fear you may unleash. Your dream is urging you express or deal with your anger in a controlled way.
If an animal is chasing you in a dream, this may suggest that in real life you are in flight from some area of your personality that wants to be expressed.
If you are trying to find refuge from animals—either by building a defense or running away—this indicates a struggle with instincts that threaten your safety in waking life. In some cases dreams of being threatened or attacked by animals may be telling you that you are repressing your instincts—perhaps being too civilized— and you should try and loosen up more. Being bitten by an animal could indicate aggression from someone close to you or that our own aggressive instincts are not under control. Any threat from a sinister animal suggests fears and doubts you may have about your ability to manage your emotions. See also SURREALISM AND FANTASY.
If you hear animals making sounds in your dream, you need to consider what these sounds mean to you in waking life and then to make a symbolic link. For example, if you hear an animal barking, wailing or whining for attention, these sounds could be calling your attention to the qualities that that particular animal represents to you.
If you hear ominous growling, roaring or cackling, it could reflect pent-up anger either within yourself or another person.
If you hear braying, it could indicate a need to overcome basic animal instincts.
If you hear bleating, you may be taking on new cares and responsibilities that could be positive or negative depending on your attitude towards them. See also SENSES.... The Element Encyclopedia
