CHILDHOOD HOME / HOME FROM THE PAST

If your childhood home or a home from the past continually features in your dreams, this does not necessarily mean you are stuck in the past or long to return to the security of childhood. The homes in which you once lived can become symbols of certain factors that shaped the person you have now become. Perhaps the most common past home dream is that of living in the house you lived in when you were a child. There may be major changes to the structure of the house, there may be people there that you hadn’t met when you lived there, but you know that house more intimately than any other. It is a true reflection of yourself and the storehouse for all your emotions, both positive and negative. The house in which you grew up always has a huge influence on your psychology. Your house gives you boundaries and it is the place where you go to feel safe, its every corner a reflection of your mind. It is the symbol of your family, connections and traditions.

Your dream childhood home can help give you clues about your current situation and help you examine your personality. What kind of house was it? Was it a large or small house, and did you think it was the same size when you were young? Are you still living in the same house? How many floors did it have? How many windows? What was its shape? Most of us live in square houses with corners, but some people’s houses are round with no corners. Some suggest this may have a profound effect on a person’s psychology because circles represent infinity and thus no restrictions. Can you remember what colors your house was painted in; how do those colors affect your feelings now? If something good always happened to you in a certain room, the color of that room may still make you happy for the rest of your life. Was there a place in your house where you went if you were miserable, or a place where something bad happened? What were the colors and shapes that were involved? Is it a dark place or a light place?

Although you are by no means doomed to repeat past mistakes, your dreaming mind may use your first home as an important reference throughout your life and you may often find yourself trying to work through current issues in the setting of this childhood home. Try to think of such dreams as an opportunity to reflect on your basic beliefs about home and family. Are you repeating patterns from your childhood in a current relationship and situation? Can your dream help you relate the past to your present life and to your life in the future?... The Element Encyclopedia

DIGGING

The significance of this dream varies according to the circumstances of the dreamer.

For a person in business cm* in a job, it signifies that hard, or harder, work will be necessary to attain what he wants.

For a professional person, it indicates that a further course of study or acquisition of higher qualifications would be beneficial to his or her aims.

If you don’t fit either of the foregoing categories, then the key to the meaning of the dream lies in the effort involved in the action; if the soil was soft and/or the digging easy, you are in for a happy period of easy living; if the digging was hard and slow going, you can expect to have to struggle for a while yet... DIGGING / GROWING / WATERING

Just as the physical earth is made up of past events—the trees and leaves, the plants and creatures that have lived and crumbled into the dust of the soil—so the earth of your dream represents the past on which your present depends and your future is built. Therefore, digging into it will tend to uncover things—most often feelings—you have buried there from your past. The earth is also your mother. It represents the soil, the genetic material, and the background from which you have sprung. It is the womb of the past from which you are born. In other words, it is both the physical material from which things grow as well as the overall environment in which something new can grow.

So if you are digging in your dream, is there something you need to learn about your past? Or is there something you want to find out, a vital piece of information that will complete the picture? If you are uncovering an object or old bones, then you are probably becoming conscious of long buried memories and feelings from your past.

If you are trying to bury something, what are you trying to cover up or hide in waking life? Bear in mind the expressions associated with digging, too. Is someone having a dig at you in waking life? Did your dream reflect your entrenched, firmly held opinions? Or was your unconscious urging you to adopt a more down-to-earth approach? If you are a gardener, you will know that although the earth is the giver of sustenance, security and new life, each life cycle also has an end, so when earth figures in a dream, it may also indicate the end of a phase in life and the beginning of a new one

A dream about digging, watering or feeding the earth may therefore suggest your desire to begin a new phase. It could also depict your fear of unpalatable hidden truths being exposed in waking life. Anything growing from the earth in your dream shows something that has developed from the possibilities of your life, and who you are.

If your dream depicted you planting a seed, try to make a connection with your waking life. The dream seeds may refer to the planting of an intellectual or creative concept that has the potential to grow if placed in fertile ground and cared for. Then again, planting dreams may refer to your thoughts about starting a family. A dream of healthy crops may suggest that your waking ventures or family are flourishing.

If what you are taking from the earth is vegetables or things to eat, these are the fruits of your past efforts, and suggest benefits arising in your life. If, however, the earth in your dream is barren and nothing is growing, this could indicate that you are emotionally and physically exhausted by the demands of waking life.... DIGGING FOR TREASURE

Finding money in a dream, or digging or searching for treasure or riches can suggest power, independence and security. It may have a literal interpretation, telling you that now is a good time to start a new financial venture, but more often than not it symbolizes discovering parts of yourself that have been neglected or repressed. The treasure in your dream may symbolize things you want from life but can also suggest the treasure lying within you, maybe something that has been neglected or repressed such as a positive attitude, self-respect or a talent of some kind. Ancient dream-lore disagrees with more modern interpretations of this kind of dream, suggesting that it indicates that someone you have loved and trusted is not worthy of your love. DIGGING, EXCAVATION

Example: I entered a neglected garden adjoining a house I had formerly lived in. I was astonished that I had never noticed this garden before. I took a spade and hoe and began to work vigorously in order to put things nght, digging like a navvy. But wherever I put my spade I turned up live shells and hand grenades—highly explosive and very dangerous. I was terrified I would be blown to pieces and hurried away’ (from Organism of the Mind, G.R. Meyer, Kegan Paul, 1933).

The dreamer in the example was a man in his 40s who had taken up meditation on the suggestion of a friend. It shows him discovering and uncovering a pan of himself he had not known before. In doing so he meets explosive emotions and conflicts he is not used to dealing with. Digging usually depicts delving into hidden or buried areas of ourself. We may uncover feelings from our childhood—creative realisations, features of the unconscious, even dead bodies or ancient creatures. Digging can also represent our work on renovating our attitudes, personality structure or habits. See garden. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

PAST

lives While there may be some evidence for reincarnation in the work of Dr Ian Stevenson, dreams which clearly state reincarnation in their theme most likely represent present life situations.

Example: ‘I dream of living in China, a long time ago. I was married to a man with whom I had two children. He began to tire of me and brought concubines into our household. I hated him. When I woke I realised I had dreamt about a past life’ (Patricia L). Patricia had in fact been married to a man in this life who, after her two children were born, began to bring other women home. This broke up their marriage. From Patricia’s point of view, this happened because in a past life her husband and she had not resolved their difficulties, so had to meet them again in this lifetime—whatsoever ye sow, so shall ye reap. Where such dreams have been thoroughly explored, I have found that their imagery arises from emotions and trauma which the dreamer finds difficult to meet. Placing it in a past life enables one to avoid the difficulty of experiencing present life pain. Patricia says she hated her Chinese husband.

The dream process can create a drama to represent our present situation using any form of structure. It is, after all, the master dramatist. This function of the unconscious explains many ‘past life’ memories elicited by hypnotic regression. Most of them are explainable in terms of present life trauma or situation. PASTRIES

To eat pastries in dreams is synonymous with happiness. However, to eat sweets compulsively—that is, gluttonously—reveals a feeling of anxiety and frustration. Another characteristic dream, which is often accompanied by a strong feeling of guilt, is when you steal a cake and hide it to eat it. This image alludes to an excess of sentimentalism which causes conflict with more realistic people.

PEOPLE FROM YOUR PAST

Images of people from your past not your present can link you with that period in your life, as well as with specific memories and experiences. A first boyfriend in a dream, for example, would represent all the emotions and struggles you had in that relationship and what you took away from it in terms of life experience. Dreaming often of people you knew in the past would therefore suggest that past experiences or lessons are very active at the moment, or that you are reviewing those areas of your life.

If you dreamed of a reunion with someone from the past, this suggests that you are looking back to the past too much and should be looking ahead to the future.
