DREAMING TOGETHER

Example:41 dreamt my sister was attacking me with a pair of scissors. She backed me against a wall and stabbed me. During the day after the dream my sister phoned me at work and said she’d had an awful dream in which she stabbed me with scissors’ (D).

The Poseidia Institute of Virginia Beach, Va., have run a number of group ‘mutual dreaming’ experiments. Although the Institute suggests very positive results, a critical survey of the dreams and reports reveals a lack of hard evidence. Like other areas of ESP dreaming, it can seldom ever be willed. But the dreams did show themes related to problems regarding intimate meeting. Also, some of the dreams were directly about the goal of dream meeting, as in the following example.

Example: ‘I find the group of people I am looking for. There were maybe six or more people. They were asleep on mattresses except for two or three. These were awake and waiting for me, and wearing small pointed hats such as Tibetan Lamas wear. In the dream I realised this meant they had achieved sufficient inner growth to remain awake in sleep. We started to communicate and were going to wake the others’ (Tom C). See dream as a meeting place.

the dream as extended perception Even everyday mental functions such as thought and memory occur largely unconsciously. During sleep, perhaps because we surrender our volition, what is left of self awareness enters the realm where the nine-tenths of the iceberg of our mind is active. In this realm faculties can function which on waking seem unobtainable.

For example:

1- Extending awareness to a point distant from the body, to witness events confirmed by other people. This is often called out of body experience (OBE), but some of these experiences suggest the nature of consciousness and time may not be dualistic (having to be either here or there). See out of body experience.

2-Being aware of the death or danger of a member of family. Kinship and love seem to be major factors in the way the unconscious functions. See dead people dreams.

3-Seeing into the workings of the body and diagnosing an illness before it becomes apparent to waking observation. Dr Vasali Kasatkin and Professor Medard Boss have specialised in the study of such dreams. In a recent dream told to me, a man looked back into a bedroom and saw a piece of the wall fall away. Waves of water gushed from a main pipe.

The dreamer struggled to hold back the piece of broken pipe. Within two weeks his colon burst and he had to have a major operation. See meditation.

4-Access to a computer-like ability to son through a massive store of information and experience to solve problems. These dreams are often confused with precognitive ability. Prediction does occur from these dreams, but it arises, as with weather prediction, from a massive gathering of information, most of which we have forgotten consciously. Monon Schatzman, in a New Scientist anicle, showed how subjects can produce answers to complex mathematical problems in their dreams. See dream process as computer; creativity and problem solving in dreams.

5-Tapping a collective mind which stores all experience, and is sensed as godlike or holy. See dream as spiritual guide.

It seems likely that before the development of speech the human animal communicated largely through body language. Some dreams suggest we still have this ability to read a person’s health, sexual situation, intentions and even their past, through body shape, posture and tiny movements. See postures, movement and body language.

GETTING WEAKER / GETTING STRONGER

Are you weak in your dreams or so strong you can manage any physical feat required of you? If you are feeling weak, a medical check-up might be required, but it could also suggest that you feel somehow less than perfect in waking life and unable to accomplish what is required of you. Dreams in which you simply can’t keep up with the action or are outrun by the bogey man are experienced more frequently as you age, and may well be your dreaming mind’s way of helping you adjust to the natural aging process.

If your dreams often feature themes of illness or loss of strength and you are concerned by these, see your doctor by all means; the chances are, however, that you feel unable to meet some internal or external commands in waking life. In your dreams, your unmet goals and high standards are making you ill. But dreams in which you have boundless energy and physical power seem to be telling you that you are capable of far more than you realize. In some cases, as with people who are seriously ill or disabled, dreams of extraordinary energy and good health are compensatory or wish- fulfillment dreams.

If, in your dream, you are weak because you have lost weight, this can suggest concern about body image but it can also indicate possessive, demanding behavior from the people in your life. Conversely, gaining weight and strength may show an excessive need for their approval and a childish need for instant gratification. Finally, if other people are watching either your feats of strength or growing weakness in your dream, this suggests that you are preoccupied with themes of competition. Who or what are you trying to compete with, surpass or vanquish?... The Element Encyclopedia

RESTRAINT / RESTRICTION

In addition to the meanings given under Imprison and Prison, there is the possibility that the dream is referring to restraints and restrictions in your external circumstances, or to those mental and physical limitations that begin to manifest themselves from the age of forty-five onwards. Restrictions and limitations may have the positive value of drawing

your attention from egotistic pursuits to things that matter more: for instance, loss of intellectual sharpness does not disqualify you from gaining self-knowledge; and the latter may be helped by the collapse of egotism. However, if you judge that the restrictions are purely negative, take steps to remove them or to find alternative supplies of satisfaction.

If neither of these options seems to avail and the only remaining option is to accept the inevitable, this may well be life’s way of reminding you of what is important in life.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

TRAIN

This dream symbol can be very complicated and its meaning is specific to the dreamer (as all dream symbols are).

If you normally take the train to work and it is a part of your daily experience, closer attention should be paid to the other details of the dream. Going on a train ride may be symbolic of your life’s journey.

If you are the engineer, you may be reassuring yourself in the dream state that you are in control of a specific situation or life in general.

The train could also be symbolic of your need to move on and to do things in an orderly and sequential manner. Freud said that the train is usually a phallic symbol and that a train going through a tunnel represents intercourse. Freud also said that there are other possibilities to this symbol.

For example if you missed the train in your dream, you may be fearful of missing important opportunities. Jung thought that the train ride represented the way a person moves and behaves just like everyone else and that you the dreamer may be striving for wholeness.... The Bedside Dream Dictionary

Vision: In a man’s dream, a train is often a sign of fear—fear of having missed something.

The train you have missed in the dream is the equivalent of a missed opportunity in real life. Traveling in a train: you are advancing quickly in life. Watching a train leaving the station: a separation is unavoidable. Seeing a train: you will have to say goodbye to someone. Being on a train that goes through a tunnel: you are giving away one of your secrets. In a woman’s dream, a train is a sexual symbol, particularly if it is driving into a tunnel.

TRAIN

Your future is going forward. Given that the train follows a fixed route, this dream suggests that you are receiving help and direction in your vital life. As a means of collective transportation, on the other hand, this image symbolizes the need to share projects, ideas, and thoughts. From it you can deduce the need to speak more often with your loved ones, fleeing from the isolation that threatens you. On the contrary, being the only occupant of the train is a sign of great timidness or ego.

If you miss a train, it indicates the frustrated hope for change or the desire to leave a real situation, but without a clear sense of direction. For Jung, the figure of public vehicles expresses that the dreamer has not found her own way yet, and that her behavior is the same as everyone else’s. According to Freud, dreams that imply movement represent sexual relations. In fact, Freud believed the train to be a phallic symbol.

In antiquity, dreaming of voyages presaged a change in fortune. This would be better if the destination were at the top of a hill or of a mountain. And if the voyage continued at large in a straight line, the good luck would appear very soon in your life.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

TRAIN

You are undergoing a pretty significant change or transformation. Any vehicle that moves you from one location to another signifies that big shifts are occurring.

A train is much faster than a car but slower than a plane. In this way, being on a train in your dream means that there is a medium amount of transformation going on in your life.

A train is a type of public transportation, so the changes that are taking place are more likely to relate to your public rather than your private life.

The state of the train, such as its age and the shape it is in, will offer you more distinctions to add to your interpretation.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

TRAIN

The train as a dream symbol is often linked with the Freudian interpretation of the train (phallus) going through the tunnel (vagina), representing intercourse. Yet even Freud gave trains alternative meanings (e.g., missing a train might represent missed opportunities or even missing one’s death (rather than missing intercourse). Being the engineer on a train and traveling smoothly down the track may mean staying “on track” in one’s life.

As with all such symbols, the dreamer’s prior associations with trains determines their meaning in a particular dream.... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia

TRAIN

As with trams and buses and other forms of public transport, dreams about trains suggest that you are no longer controlling your life and have become too dependent on someone or something else, such as your parents, your partner or a job. According to Freudians, trains with their huffing and pumping are phallic symbols, and a train entering a tunnel is a symbol of sexual intercourse. A broken-down or cancelled train may actually be a positive sign in dreamland, as it suggests that you are considering making your own way under your own steam. To dream of missing a train or passing a destination may also suggest missed opportunities.

If the train is stuck on a platform, this may suggest a problem that needs ironing out before any further progress can be made in waking life.

If the train makes an emergency stop, this warns against moving too fast and if the train stops at a crossing, this suggests the need for patience.... The Element Encyclopedia

TRAIN TRACKS

Train tracks symbolize a desire for change or the imminent sense of danger that upcoming change portends.

If the train represents change itself, then the tracks connect to the possibility of shift and change that could be occurring but at present is not yet happening. Train tracks have a measure of danger connected to them because a train could come along at any moment, putting you in peril. In this way, a dream that takes place on train tracks could be pointing to the possibility that some dramatic change is on its way and, when it arrives, has the potential for causing fear or destruction.

The tracks that carry a train indicate all the places a train might go. One interpretation relates to the potential for movement and travel. There is a very powerful association with train tracks as a dividing line between classes, as in the “other side of the tracks.” Which side of the tracks are you on in your dream?... TRAINS

A train will often highlight our attitude to social behaviour and relationships with other people. It will also clarify our attitude to ourselves.

A steam train would suggest that we feel ourselves to be somewhat outdated and old-fashioned but still viable, whereas an up-to-date electric turbo might suggest speed and efficiency. Catching the train shows we have been successful in having outside circumstances co-operate with us in achieving a particular goal, whereas missing the train indicates we do not have the resources to enable us to succeed in an appropriate way, either because we have forgotten something or because we have not been sufficiently careful. We fear that we will miss an opportunity. Equally, we may feel that external circumstances are imposing an element of control over us. Often dreams of missing a train and then catching either it or a later one, suggest that we are managing our inner resources better. Dreams of missing a train, alternating with those of catching one, show we are trying to sort out our motivations. Getting off the train before its destination or it has reached a station implies we are afraid of succeeding at a particular project. We do not appear to be in control. Getting off the train before it starts suggests that we have changed our mind about a situation in waking life. Railway lines and tracks will have significance as ways of getting us to our destination. Being conscious of the way the track runs ahead may give us an inkling as to what direction we are going. Recognizing the signals up ahead would have the same significance. Coming off the rails might suggest doing something inappropriate or of not being in control. Not wanting to be on the train might indicate we feel we are being unduly influenced by outside circumstances. Arriving at a station indicates we have completed a stage of our life journey. We may be ready for a new relationship with the world in general.

The carriages on a train suggest the various compartments or sections of our lives and the way we feel about them.

For example, if a carriage is untidy or dirty, we are aware that we need to ‘clean up’ an aspect of our lives.... Dream Meanings of Versatile

VEGETABLES

(see by type, Eating, Garden)

If this is a play on words, your subconscious is saying that for some reason you have begun to feel as productive as an inanimate, uprooted vegetable. Get up and become an active participant in life again!

Each vegetable in a dream has a different interpretive value.

For example, a carrot is a masculine emblem that also represents vision and luck. Additionally, as an omen, carrots symbolize forthcoming wealth, health, and happy marriages.

Dreaming of eating celery is an omen of love and affection. Cauliflower growing in a garden foretells increased business prospects, corn might depict a “corny” personality or the promise of improved finances, and beans carry a magical overtone thanks to the story of “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

Root vegetables denote grounding, a connection to your family, and the staples of both spiritual and mundane life.

Jungian: Because vegetables get nourished by all the elements, they represent the depths of the subconscious, the deepest roots, and the fundamental self.

Societal, cultural, or religious limitations. Many vegetables have been shunned because of one of these contexts, such as tomatoes being thought poisonous, or potatoes not being eaten by Puritans because they are not in the Bible.

VEGETABLES AND FRUIT

Vegetables and fruit are a vital source of nourishment in the real world, and in dreamland their reference is usually to feeding the emotions rather than nourishing the body.

In general, fertility and readiness are associated with ripe and succulent fruit. To see fruit in your dream may therefore signify a period of growth, abundance, sweet reward and financial gain. However, if you dream of fruit that is past its ripeness, it is said to represent a missed opportunity or a loss of fertility. You are thought to be concerned with nourishment, fullness or abundance if you dream of vegetables; or feel you are lacking these things if the vegetables are spoiled or of poor quality. According to Freud, dreams that feature vegetables and fruits may be of a sexual nature, depending on the shape of the vegetable and your feelings in the dream. For Jungians, vegetables are symbols of personal growth indicating the need for spiritual nourishment.

Interpreting the symbolism of fruits and vegetables in your dream depends on how you feel about them in daily life; whether you like them for their taste and nutritional value, or find them dull and boring. You may be projecting a need to feed your body or soul, or reflecting on a dull and not very satisfying part of life. VEGETABLES DIRECTORY

Vegetables, like fruits, provide nourishment and nutrients but unlike fruits they are seldom regarded as delicious or sweet treats. This is why in dreamland they symbolize experiences that are good for us, providing basic emotional nourishment. But vegetables are not always good news; because we often refer to people who are slow, lazy, sluggish or inactive as ’vegetables’ or ’cabbages’ or ’couch potatoes’, a dream image of vegetables may be referring to your own inability to think, function or get active in waking life.

In dreams, vegetables can symbolize the most basic human emotions. There may also be an allusion to your diet; in waking life you may not be getting enough fiber, cereals and vegetables. Bear in mind, too, that your own personal associations and preferences concerning specific vegetables will influence your interpretation; for example, if you were forced to eat spinach as a child, you may associate it with punishment. If, however, you have taken personal associations into consideration and they still can’t help you interpret your dream, it may be that your unconscious was drawing from a wider source of symbolism.

For example, if you dreamed of a long, rigid vegetable such as a leek, carrot or cucumber, this could be a phallic symbol referring to intimacy issues in waking life. Also consider the words associated with vegetables such as ’cool as a cucumber’, ’mushrooming’, ’dangling a carrot’, ’peas in a pod’ and ’hot potato’. Because many vegetables grow in the soil, they also have numerous associations with death and rebirth, often being considered as a powerful symbol of spiritual growth. In the broadest sense, vegetables are a connection to your family and community, and represent the goodness you can take from earth.

Vegetables force you down to the depths of your unconscious.

Eating vegetables signifies the taking in of fundamental spiritual nourishment, and in this sense, cooking vegetables can be seen as an alchemical process.

If the vegetables in your dream are overcooked, this could suggest that you are concentrating too long and too hard on a particular problem, or ’overcooking’ a relationship by allowing it to become claustrophobic. On the other hand, cooked or prepared vegetables could refer to ideas which are developing or simply offering themselves to you, ready for growth and nurture. Growing vegetables indicates fertility and renewal. Rotting vegetables are a symbol of death and endings but they are also the precursor to renewal and growth. Seeing rows of neatly planted vegetables in a dream could mean the loss of freewill or the imposition of too rigid a sense of order in your life. Wild vegetables, by the same token, symbolize disorganization. Frozen vegetables show a state of suspended emotional animation, whilst processed vegetables have had some, or all, of their nutrients removed and suggest the dominance of style over substance in waking life.

The color of the vegetable will also be significant. A common dream image presents a variety of vegetables in great abundance for the dreamer to feast on suggesting a desire to enjoy the goodness of nature. However, such dreams may also reflect concerns about your lack of money or abundance. As with fruits, don’t forget that the color, shape, number and condition of the vegetables in your dream will all be significant. See also COLORS; NUMBERS; SHAPES.

If a vegetable, or group of vegetables, featured strongly in your dream and you’d like to know more about the symbolism of vegetables, it might be worth doing some research on the historical, cultural, religious and medicinal significance of specific vegetables to enrich your interpretation. The list on pages 646-48 of specific vegetables and their meanings in dreams is by no means comprehensive.... The Element Encyclopedia

For instance, a patch of brambles can suggest irritating snags to our movement forwards, whereas nettles might represent people actually trying to prevent progress.
