Memories, feelings, guilt, which haunt us, parts of the wider awareness of the unconscious which attempt to communicate; the husks or influences from past traumas or events, which have been emptied of hurt and real influence, but still affect us; fantasies, hopes, longings we have given time to, and so filled with our life and sexual energy, and which now influence us. Ghost of living person: a sense of their thoughts or presence influencing one; haunted by desire for them, or a resentment or feeling about them.

A ghost which feels solid: the dreamer is ‘touching’ aspects of their own mind or awareness existing beyond preconceived ideas and beliefs.

Example: ‘So frequently do I dream of the house and the town I lived in as a child, I wonder if I do indeed haunt the house by dreaming of it. I must tell you I believe that a traumatic incident, which happened when I was 20, is involved. I was playing the piano downstairs when I heard a gun fired. On searching I found my father lying dead upstairs in an attic. He had shot his brains out. I took the scene in, never to be forgotten, in one horrified moment’ (Barbara T). Some people believe that, because of such incidents as described, in their dreams the living haunt a place. Seeing a ghost while awake can still be considered as connected with the dream process. GHOST

Here, it usually means the so-called “spirit of life,” which makes up a distinctly human life. In addition, it might possibly point to unused or wrongly applied intellectual activities or actions. You are chasing a phantom. This is a warning against illusions and wrong insights. Creatures from the world of fairy tales are always somewhat frightening. They may be helpful or have bad intentions. Ghosts are often an expression of guilt feelings and pangs of conscience.

If these images appear continually and are frightening, seek professional advice.

The task connected with these dream images is often to find a better understanding and a more creative use of your intellectual powers.

According to Freud, they appear most often as women (in a white nightgown).

This is because a part of us, during sleep, is freed from physical restraints and therefore capable of receiving information from other worlds. GHOST

You are dreaming of the memory or imprint of a former idea, concept, or person.

A ghost is defined as a remnant of a person’s energy that remains connected to the physical world after he or she has died. Some metaphysicians theorize that a spirit can be stuck here due to unfinished business or an untimely death. There are scientists who explore the possibility of ghosts as bumps in the electromagnetic field of energy that can sometimes be perceived by people who are living. No matter what camp you fall into, a ghost is symbolic of something from your past that continues to have a presence in your consciousness long after the event or person that inspired it has passed. This can include memories, habitual patterns, and even obsessions.

If the ghost is someone you know who is not actually dead, use the character aspect technique to discover what qualities are traits that you have let go of but that may still arise in your behavior or thought patterns from time to time. Someone who has actually passed away can be considered in the same fashion, but might represent the impact he or she had on you in life, whether positive or negative. This image in a dream could point to a need to face the ghosts of your past in the form of old choices and behaviors that still haunt you with regret.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

GHOST

If ghosts appear in your dreams, they often symbolize unfinished business, just as ghosts—or the unsettled dead—are supposed to have unfinished business on earth, not having found their place in the afterlife. Because of a ghost’s ephemeral nature, being only partially visible to some and invisible to others, they can also represent uncertainty or a lack of clarity in your thinking. Another interpretation is that seeing ghosts in dreams is a way of facing your own mortality; for this reason they can be quite disturbing, but because they may offer evidence of life after death, they could be seen as offering some comfort. You can also look at a ghost as a shadow of yourself, your own dark nature personified; the side of yourself that you’d rather not face up to.

If you want to understand the significance of dreaming about ghosts, you need to look at how they behaved in your dream. Whilst most ghosts are invisible and silent, some ghosts are noisy and throw things around; these could represent your lack of control regarding things that are happening around you in waking life. Ghosts may interact with you in dreams, but often they will not do it directly. You may feel comforted by their appearance in your dream; you may feel stressed or afraid. They may be strangers, friends, relatives or famous people that have died—your relationship to them or how you feel about them will affect what they mean in your dream—for instance the ghost may be a nagging relative who is still very much alive, but casts a shadow over your life and is always trying to push you one way or another.

At times, ghosts represent those things that are unattainable or fleeting. If, however, the ghost feels solid, you may be touching aspects of your own mind or awareness that exist beyond your own preconceived ideas and beliefs. Ghosts of living people in your dream have nothing to do with the possibility of their death in the near future; such dreams suggest, rather, a sense of their thoughts or presence haunting you. Or perhaps you are haunted by desire for them or have unexpressed feelings about them. Alternatively, and particularly if you shrank from the ghost in your dream, could the specter have represented someone whom you once wronged, a ghost from the past that is still haunting your conscience despite your conscious efforts to push it to the back of your mind?... GHOST OF SOMEONE WHO HAS DIED

Some believe that the ghosts in their dreams are real representations of the dead. This is an unlikely explanation of such dreams. More likely, to dream of the ghost of someone who is departed represents a part of you that is unclear and that you do not understand. Ghosts can also be all that you have left of loved ones who are no longer alive, so they can offer you comfort by appearing in your dreams, representing a welcome opportunity to speak once again to that special person and to come to terms with the fact that they are gone. To dream of the ghost of someone who has died might also represent something that you wanted that is no longer in your reach. This dream is telling you to move on. Another explanation is that your unconscious was pointing out an uncomfortable truth that your conscious mind is working hard to repress, just as the ghost of his father appeared to Shakespeare’s Hamlet to tell him something that he may already have known—that his father was murdered by Hamlet’s new stepfather.

To dream of touching a ghost and having it disappear indicates that you are trying to confront and come to terms with painful memories. Demonic ghost images with no face or dark shadows (’dementors’, if you are a Harry Potter fan) may represent your negative tendencies, unpleasant parts of personality or your ’shadow’. Old superstition-based dream interpretations say that dreaming of friendly ghosts is a lucky omen, and that you should be receiving unexpected good luck. On the other hand, if you were very frightened by the ghost in your dream, then others will try to impose their will on you and you must be vigilant in order to stand up to it.... HOSTEL

(Inn; Hotel; Lodge; Pub) In a dream, a hostel represents fornication, adultery, temporary marriage for pleasure, renting a space, renting tools or machinery, leasing an area for storage, or renting a garment.

If a sick person rents a room in a hostel or an inn on the highway in a dream, it means his death, or it could mean that he will recover from an illness, or dispel anxiety, or take residence in a new country, or it could mean marriage after being single for a long time, or buying a vehicle, finding a money pouch, or something one can sell to help him during his financial crises.

A married person resting in a hostel in a dream means that he will beget a son who when he grows will help his father in his trade and bring him happiness and comfort.

If one’s child is disobedient, or recalcitrant, it means that he will repent and come back to live under his father or mother.

If a heedless person sees a hostel in a dream, it means that he will find guidance and return to walk on God’s path.

HOSTILITY

Direct expression of that feeling.

It is worthwhile considering who or what the dream suggests you feel hostile towards. In general the most powerful hostile feelings are towards parents, having been generated in infancy. These need to be met if one is to become an adequate sexual person in relation to an adult of the opposite sex and social authority. Unconscious hostility causes one to remain at a mystic or idealistic level of relationship with the opposite sex. causing difficulty in meeting the real individual. Meeting anger, aggression and hostility does not mean suppressing it or expressing it socially. Many of us have become, in the words of WV. Caldwell, the author of LSD Psychotherapy, ‘hostility cripples’. As human animals, anger and aggression are natural, but growing in a society which, although it practices the most terrible aggression at a national level, suppresses individual aggression, it is difficult for us to lead these urges towards maturity. Maturity in love is often talked about, but not maturity in hate. It helps if we can recognise whether we are repressing aggressions or hostility in our dreams.

If anger is felt but not expressed in a dream, then use the technique explained in dream processing, in which you carry the dream forward and express in imagination the emotions held back. This should begin the process of moTe expressive anger in one’s dreams, allowing the maturing of the aggression to begin. See Sunday school Christ under archetypes. ... HOSTILITY

If you are hurling verbal abuse at someone in a dream, this may be urging you to put your energy to better use.

If someone is hurling abuse at you, consider if you are accusing yourself of something in waking life or if you have made someone angry.

If fury is expressed vocally in your dream, consider what is being said as it may contain a clue to your agitation.

If you use or see weapons in dreams, these are clear symbols of aggression and heated emotions. The type of weapon featuring in your dream should help you understand what it represents in your waking life.

If you know the person who is attacking you, then your dream may reflect genuine hostility between the two of you.

If you do not know the person, the dream may represent your lack of control over a situation in your waking life or feelings of insecurity.

Consider also if this person could have been your shadow. Ask yourself what it is about this person that you dislike. Because your unconscious sometimes projects characteristics or qualities that you dislike in yourself onto others, in your dreams your dreaming mind may be sending you a message that you should acknowledge this hidden aspect of yourself and come to terms with it.

If you are threatened or make a threat in your dream, were you accusing yourself of something? Have you made mistakes or been inconsiderate lately? Take a note of your attitude in the dream as it could tell you a lot about your attitude towards being intimidated in real life. Do you cringe in fear or stand up for yourself? If a physical fight or dispute features in your dream, this may be between different aspects of your character or two different arguments that you need to balance.

If there is a clear winner in your dream, you need to think about what message your dreaming mind is sending you about the correct course of action to take.

If explosions feature in your dreams, they may be symbols of your feelings of anger and hostility in waking life. On the other hand, the image may also be suggesting that you are bottling up your action and now is the time to express yourself before you lose control in your waking life.

If you were lighting a fuse that triggered an explosion or taking part in a demolition in your dream, you may want to destroy an aspect of your life. This may refer to a situation you are finding difficult to resolve or negative aspects of your character that you would like to replace with positive qualities. Images of a bursting dam, an erupting volcano or an avalanche of snow or rocks may also warn of emotional explosions overwhelming your self-control; they are all a sign that you should express how you feel. More positively, such dreams may point to a release of creative energy. Hidden anger towards someone can also be revealed by sudden discharges of gas or flames from a container—a bottle, box or container in dreams often represent feelings that are bottled up. Other hatefilled images such as acid thrown in someone’s face, a decapitated loved one or throwing rotten eggs at someone can reveal that you urgently need to deal with your pent-up rage. KIDNAPPED AND TAKEN HOSTAGE

If kidnapping features in your dream, this may suggest the desire to dominate or be dominated by another person.

If you are the victim but don’t feel afraid, this could lend a sexual connotation to your dream.

If you are held hostage in a dream, this could indicate that you feel someone has a hold on you, or that you are subject to some influence that prevents you from doing what you need to do. Hostage-takers often make demands for money, personal recognition and so on. Is there someone in your waking life who is placing unnecessary demands upon you, or making you feel guilty? In some hostage dreams, as in real life, a rapport develops between the victim and the hostage-taker; if this is the case, it could indicate a love-hate relationship in your waking life. Finally, might this kind of dream not also suggest that you are held hostage, not by a person, but by your fears?

SPIRITS AND GHOSTS

Even the most prosaic and materialistic of us have dreams that include supernatural creatures or incidents.

Ghosts, witches, out-of-body experiences, UFOs, haunted houses and a whole plethora of spirits, creatures and unexplained phenomena exist in the world of the supernatural. When these images appear in your dreams, they can be unsettling, especially when psychics claim that they are connected with the supernatural. Even though there is no evidence to suggest this is the case, the mysterious and often bizarre nature of dreams has led many to interpret dreams as supernatural gifts or messages, as predictions of the future or as messages from the past. Modern oneiromancy, the prediction of the future through the interpretation of dreams, is a tradition that has its roots in pagan and ancient Greek and Roman thought, as well as in the Jewish and Christian religions.

Freudians and Jungians, together with most other dream analysts, reject the supernatural origin of dreams. Their view is that dreams bubble up from the unconscious mind and are metaphors for events or emotions occurring in our waking lives. Theologians, however, continue to admit the possibility that dreams may be supernatural or divine in origin.
