ADLER, ALFRED (1870-1937)

A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences
Born in Vienna, Austria. Studied medicine, later became a disciple of Freud. Diverged from Freud over the sexual impulse being all important in human behaviour. Adler saw people as goal oriented, with an urge toward personal growth and wholeness. He stated that in dreams we can clearly see our aggressive impulses and desire for fulfilment. Dreams can also help the dreamer define two often conflicting aspects of their experience—their image or sense of themselves, and their sense of what is socially acceptable. Because we strive from our earliest years to have some control over ourself and surroundings, we may develop a style of life around a sense of inferiority or lack of power. So a person who feels vulnerable may become aggressive to compensate. Adler therefore felt that in our dreams we not only see what we think of ourself, and what our environmental situation is, but also find a definition of our techniques for satisfying our drive to deal with and succeed in the world.... ALFRED ADLER

Dreampedia
Alfred Adler (1870–1937) was an Austrian psychiatrist who developed a personality theory referred to as individual psychology. He was at one time closely associated with Sigmund Freud, but broke with Freud to develop his own form of psychotherapy. Adler placed much less emphasis on dreams than other schools of psychiatry, and his attitude toward dreams is somewhat inconsistent. Even though he did not develop a full-blown theory of dreams, his thoughts on this subject had a significant influence on later dream theorizing.

To oversimplify the difference between Freud and Adler, Freud focused on sex and aggression and Adler focused on power and status. Adler viewed much human motivation as originating during the lengthy period of child- hood, when we are relatively powerless to control our lives. In response to this feeling of helpless- ness, the human being, according to Adler, develops a powerful urge to master his or her world. This desire for control and mastery becomes the central drive in human life.

Dreams would clearly have a different significance for Adler than they had for Freud. In Freudian theory, dreams are fundamentally arenas within which inner tensions, many of them safely hidden from view in the unconscious, could be safely discharged. Often these tensions have roots in infantile conflicts, making dreams pasoriented. For Adler, on the other hand, dreams become part of the larger project of the individual to master his or her life. In particular, dreams come about as a result of an effort—whether that effort is effective or not—to anticipate future situations, so as to allow us to imaginatively prepare for them. Although dreams are intended to help the dreamer acquire more control over his or her world, Adler recognized that many dreams are maladaptive, in the sense that, if one were to actu- ally follow their guidance, the practical results would be to detract from, rather than enhance, the goal of mastery over one’s environment.

Adler’s views provide a radically different perspective on dreams from Freud’s. For Freud dreams serve to discharge inner tensions originat- ing in the past and hidden in the unconscious, whereas for Adler the function of dreams is to anticipate the future. Also, one of the results of Adler’s portrayal of dreams is to make them more related to the thoughts and motivations of waking consciousness, in marked contrast to Freud’s portrayal, which emphasizes the disjunction between the waking and the dreaming state. Adler’s ideas, particularly as developed and for- mulated by later theorists, have influenced many contemporary therapists.... Dreampedia

COMPENSATORY WISH-FULFILLMENT DREAMS

The Element Encyclopedia
If your life is particularly difficult, you may have a dream in which you feel blissfully carefree and happy.

If you are feeling lonely and unloved, you may have a dream in which you are making love. Many dream analysts describe these night-time idylls as wish-fulfillment compensatory dreams. In classic Freudian theory, dreams are thought to be vehicles for wish-fulfillment. In dreams, the dreamer can develop and satisfy complex wishes and desires that would not be allowed to seep through to consciousness in waking life. Although this theory can be quite complicated, put simply it suggests that dreams reflect your unconscious desires. For example, if you are having financial problems, you may dream of winning the lottery.

If you are worn out after weeks of hard work, you may dream of sunning yourself on a beach without a care in the world.

If you are worried about the way you look, you may dream of being a supermodel.

Bear in mind, though, that compensatory wish-fulfillment is just one explanation for uplifting dreams; the meaning of your dream will always remain personal to you. However much a dream may appear to be wish-fulfillment, it is still important to consider its many layers of meaning. Jung’s theories about alchemy may also help you understand feelings of both intense joy and of sadness in your dreams.

In his classic 1944 text Psychology and Alchemy, Jung concluded that the ancient tradition of alchemy could help us make sense of a universally valid truth—that one becomes aware of new meanings within the unconscious by seeing them mirrored in the world around us. This is the psychological phenomenon of projection—the placing of unknown and unfulfilled desires onto other people and things—a process Jung believed was often at work in dreams.... DREAMS AND SELF-KNOWLEDGE

Dreampedia
Dreams help you see yourself as you are: your true inner beauty, your potential, where you are both missing and getting the point of lessons you are working on. Nothing is more important than to know yourself. This makes all things on all planes in all realities easy. My channel has explained, "You do not have to suffer to grow. This is not what God intended, not His concept at all. It should be delightful to learn to know yourself. You are all going to make mistakes, and some things will seem awkward and uncomfortable at first. But if you can go out as children with eagerness and curiosity for learning, you will begin to understand what a wonderful adventure living really is. "Nothing is unchangeable. When you dream of a particular problem or situation in your life, remember it is given to you in order that you may creatively resolve and move beyond it. "The most difficult program to break is viewing change as something frightening, difficult, painful, or a lot of hard work. If you want to make life hard on yourself, this is your choice. God is patient. There is an eternity to learn that living is joyous and effortless. You create your life daily. You can choose to change it at any time. When you tire of running from lessons, you can make joyful progress very quickly. "The key thing is to have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. Some people have this when they incarnate, others take longer to develop it. This is the ability to sort out truths from all teachings, experiences and people around you. Lessons are being presented to you constantly, whether through your own or someone else's life. You can learn a great deal by watching other people interacting with one another. Watch and observe, but do not judge. This is the key with both self and others."... Dreampedia

EX-BOY / GIRLFRIEND

The Bedside Dream Dictionary
It is very common for people to dream about ex-partners. Individuals that have been an important part of our lives continue to take up a part of our mind and heart.

It is impossible to very dramatically shut the person out of thoughts and feelings. Just because the relationship ends does not mean that all is finished. As we go through relationships we learn and at times pick up “battle wounds.” You will continue to dream about your ex-girlfriend or boyfriend until you “let go” of them on a very important level, or until you learned your lessons from that relationship. Either way, dreaming about your ex-romance does not predict future involvement. It may be wish-fulfillment, reliving memories, or working out old issues. Dreams are very rarely prophetic. HALF

Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary
1- Dreams can often have a very peculiar quality in that our image may only be half there or we perhaps only experience half an action. This usually indicates an incompleteness in us, being a sort of in-between state which means that we have to make decisions. Often it is about either going forward into the future or back into the past: completion or non- completion.

For instance, we may have half-completed a task and be aware of this, but do not know how to finish it. Often the dream images that appear can show us how to do this. Conversely, if in a dream we have only partially completed a task and are left feeling dissatisfied with what has happened, we perhaps need to consider in waking life what needs to be done to enable us to complete the action in the dream. What would we have done had we been able to complete it?

2- To have only half of what we feel we should have - for instance in quantity perhaps only to have half of the food or drink we had expected, indicates that we are possibly selling ourselves short. We are not allowing ourselves to have what we need.

To dream of being half way up a hill or a mountain or halfway down a river would indicate that there is some indecision. We are not as motivated as we should, or could, be to continue with the task we have in hand. We have made an initial effort but greater effort is needed in order to be where we want to be. This type of dream is very often to do with either motivating ourselves or others.

To continually dream of slipping back, until we are only halfway through our task, to be repeating it over and over again, would indicate that we do not have the ability to complete it. There is perhaps an extra skill that we need to enable us to achieve success.

3- A degree of spiritual indecision is also indicated here.

The dreamer should look at where he wants to be spiritually... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

MACHINE MALFUNCTION

The Element Encyclopedia
These dreams are moderately common, being more frequent in women. They occur when you feel anxious about making an emotional connection or when you feel you are losing touch with someone. Elevators often appear in dreams suffering from some kind of bizarre malfunction. You push a button and go sideways or fly hurtling upward through the roof or the elevator crashes and so on. As with all symbols of movement, elevators tend to reflect your progress with a current situation or problem in waking life; if the elevator malfunctions, you are not getting what you bargained for or may be contributing unwittingly to a pattern that is no longer in your best interests. The flip side to such dreams is a dream in which smooth operation is the order of the day. This type of dream usually occurs when you feel there is an improvement in an emotional connection.... MAKING LIFE EASY ON YOURSELF

Dreampedia
If you know yourself, then your life works. You do not have problems in one-to-one relationships. You do not set yourself up to be rejected or dumped on, lied to or ripped off. You do not set yourself up to be bored or frustrated, for you are in tune with and following your creative life path. Remember that no one is going to take you by the hand and lead you step by step along the way. If you want insight, ask and you will receive. But you must make your own choices and decisions. It is your life. You are the writer, producer, and director, and you are playing all the roles. Create  whatever you want. You have total freedom. It is only your thoughts that limit you. Your dream symbols help you look at the very thought patterns that are governing your life. Dreams take you to a higher level of consciousness and understanding which has the power to transform your life and your world. The whole purpose is to see objectively the life situations you are creating, survey the limitations and obstacles imposed through your own beliefs, and understand how best to work around or eliminate them. As you work on your own growth, all others will benefit; they will see your light, your knowledge and your truth.  ... Dreampedia

MALFUNCTIONING MACHINE

The Element Encyclopedia
Dreams in which your car breaks down, your computer crashes or your phone won’t work occur for two possible reasons. First of all, your dreaming mind may be warning you to take precautionary steps, such as installing anti- virus software on your computer or making sure your car is regularly serviced, so as to avert potential problems in the future.

If this isn’t the case, the malfunction could be a symbol for an aspect of yourself that isn’t working properly. A car, for example, could symbolize your energy or drive, and, if it breaks down, your lack of it. Are you in danger of running out of control? If a fuse blows in your dream, are you about to explode with frustration over someone or something?... The Element Encyclopedia

MOLLUSK / OCTOPUS / SHELLFISH / SNAIL

The Element Encyclopedia
If a shelled mollusk, such as a scallop or cowry, caught your eye in your dream, this may suggest female sexuality. Dream shellfish—in the same manner as the crustaceans—represent the defensive shell you may use in waking life to avoid hurt or emotional involvement.

If you came across an oyster in your dream, was the shell open or closed? If the oyster shell was shut, it may be hinting that your unconscious contains a pearl of wisdom. Oysters are also traditionally thought to be aphrodisiacs, so is it time to reinvigorate your love life? If the oyster shell was empty, could your unconscious have been indicating events that have passed you by, or do you think the world is no longer your oyster? If a mussel features in your dream, this may suggest that you are afraid to reveal your soft, pulpy and vulnerable interior and are in a state of hiding. Another interpretation is that you are worried about your state of dependence, having attached yourself to someone or something because you believe that you cannot make it on your own. Consider also the homonym for mussel. Should a clam or clams appear in your dream are you closing up, withdrawing, withholding, avoiding, being reticent or clamming up in some way in waking life? Perhaps you are keeping a secret. Alternatively, it could be that something in your life feels sticky or uncomfortably close, as in clammy. On the other hand it may also imply happiness, euphoria, and that you are as happy as a clam.

If a freshwater or land-based snail featured in your dream, do you wish to creep into your shell or, as snails move slowly, is a project taking longer than you thought in waking life? Other interpretations for snail include: lacking in vitality or enthusiasm, needing to slow down or speed up, being ready to protect or defend yourself, and feeling at home wherever you go.

If slugs feature in your dream, this can suggest any of the following: that you are lacking in energy or vitality, functioning below par, being unenthusiastic or making slow but steady progress. They could also suggest a devious, unmannered or deceitful person, a slug or slime ball, that you are feeling vulnerable, or that you or someone else is being spineless and is acting in a cowardly manner.

Octopuses have numerous tentacles that operate independently, so could your unconscious have been commenting on your multitasking ability? As a sea creature, the octopus carries the energy of emotion and the many ways to hold or connect. In their positive form, these creatures reflect emotional depth and the ability to direct your energy in many directions without losing your center. A dream octopus may therefore suggest successful business deals or any other project involving much multitasking. It may also be associated with a person or situation that has many ways of holding or affecting you, such as a mother or a debt.

If a squid squirted a cloud of black ink in your face in your dream, could this be indicating that emotional conflicts are being obscured rather than confronted?... The Element Encyclopedia

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF IF DREAMING OF CELEBRITIES

The Element Encyclopedia
To fully understand the message of a dream in which a celebrity features you need to hone in on the quality they represent and decide whether it pertains to someone you know, or to some aspect of yourself. First you need to consider the outstanding trait for which that celebrity is famous, then you need to think about what makes that person stand out for you. For example if you dream of Madonna, why didn’t your dreaming mind select another female singer, for example Shirley Bassey? What is it about Madonna that inspires you? Is it her drive, her ambition, her feistiness or her ability to reinvent herself? Try to spell out in your mind the qualities this person stands for and what trait is being shown. Then consider the implications. Celebrity dreams may seem sweet or even corny, but they do have a powerful energy.

If you think the celebrity represents a quality in yourself you’d like to foster, don’t assume you have to copy them and follow their life path. Remember dreams only depict the essence of something; the way you choose to put that energy to work, and how it appears in your life, is entirely up to you.... The Element Encyclopedia

THE SELF

A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences
Our conscious self or ego is only a tiny pan of our totality, as is obvious when we consider how much of our memory or experience we can hold in mind at any one time.

The self, as defined by Jung, is both what we are consciously aware of, and the massive potential remaining unconscious.

The self has no known boundaries, for we do not yet know the end of what the mind is capable of, or what consciousness touches out of sight of waking.

The mass of experience and awareness which lies in the background of our waking awareness is like an inner guiding factor which, apart from expressing precise pieces in the form of remembered facts and events, guides us, if we listen, through intuition, feeling states, dreams or illumination. Its symbols are: a ring, a square area, a great tree, Christ, a shining being or animal, a talking animal, a strange stone or rock, symbols like the cross or mandala, a round table, God, a guru, an elephant, a crowned or shining snake. Here are some examples of the self in dreams.

Example: ‘1 am climbing a tree to get a stone. This stone has special powers that flower. I’m nearly there when I look down and notice that there aren’t any branches on the left side of the tree. This causes me to consider the possibility of falling and that in turn leads to a fear of climbing any higher. I wake with my heart beating strongly, but little feeling of fear.’ Example: 41 lopk into the third square, it was filled with an iridescent blue colour, shining and beautiful to look at, a beautiful substance. I felt it had to do with religion, but I couldn’t quite grasp it.1 Example: ‘I was in a small town with a group of men. We were standing in a small square praying. As I prayed I realised I could fly.’

Awareness of what the self holds is important. It contains what is our own personal wisdom and insight regarding life in general and particular.

It is not full of creeds and dogmas and conflict as are organised attempts to express the spiritual. But it does have its dark side.

To grasp the stone with special powers, understand the significance of the iridescent blue square, or find real uplift in prayer as these dreams depict, we need a clear rational mind which allows intuition and feeling but is not relinquished or lost in the immensity of the self. Touching the vastness of our being we may feel ourself to be vast, all knowing, a guru. In this state, Jung says, a person loses all sense of humour and drops ordinary human contacts. Functionally what happens is that as a defence against meeting our pain and childhood trauma as we enter this vast storehouse of our being, as a way of escaping the self responsibility for our condition, one might fly off into feelings of loving all things, of knowing the mystery of it all, of being the Buddha.

The problem is that while it might be true we are in essence the Christ, or have wisdom, these realisations are distorted by the undealt-with childhood traumas and longings. See aura; mandala. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

THE SELF

The Element Encyclopedia
The most important archetype of all is the self—the higher, more spiritual aspect of the personality. In dreams it can appear in many forms; most typically as a child or baby, suggesting vulnerability, freshness, spontaneity and potential. It can also be symbolized by the circle, the cross, and the mandala figures that Jung was fond of painting. (See SYMBOLS.) To a woman, the self may also be presented as a wise old woman, priestess, fairy godmother, biological mother, queen or princess. To a man, the self may manifest as a king, priest, wise old man, guru, prophet or philosopher.... The Element Encyclopedia

VAMPIRE / BAT / WEREWOLF

The Element Encyclopedia
The most obvious image of a vampire is of a creature that is dead and sucks the blood of the living, rising from the grave at night to do so—then sleeping all day in a most inhuman-like fashion. Your blood is your life force, it carries with it everything you need to survive; if your blood drains away, you become weak and die. Vampires are therefore the parasites of the supernatural realm; they share a world with ghouls (creatures that prey on the dead), and the succubi and incubi that take on human form to have sex with sleeping people. In the past, when the Catholic Church was a little more superstitious, they blamed a person’s apparently sudden sexual awareness on these sexual interlopers of the night.

Vampires are often repelled by simple, natural things like daylight; they are also turned away by religious symbols in mythology.

Dreaming of these parasitic creatures can signify a number of things: that a part of your existence is having the life sucked out of it, that you need to take a closer look at the more tiresome aspects of your life and dispel the worries connected with them or that you need to employ some kind of self-protection or preservation. It may be that your partner is holding you back, or that your mother is trying to control every aspect of your life so that your energy is being drained away. It is also possible, but rare, that you are the one behaving in a parasitic manner and are subconsciously quite disturbed by it. Alternatively, to dream of seeing a vampire may indicate that you are feeling seductive, powerful and very sensual.

Werewolves and bats, like vampires, come out at night to suck people’s blood; just as vampires go through a metamorphosis to become bats, so too werewolves undergo a transformation from human beings during the full moon. It is thought that these creatures in your dream mean that there is something going on in your life that is awkward and difficult to deal with. To dream of a werewolf may also suggest that some part of your life is not what it seems. Both vampires and werewolves have been regarded as symbols of dark forces since medieval times. Both drain their victims of their vital essence. To imagine one or other of these creatures in your dream should be taken as a warning to distance yourself from someone in waking life who doesn’t have your best interests at heart. It could also refer to some activity or habit that is having a negative effect on you. Bear in mind that while werewolves are believed to have a particular preference for young women (suggesting dangerous sexual predators), vampires, their fanged fellow fiends of the night, are opportunistic killers who take their sustenance from any kind of human blood, be it a man’s, woman’s or child’s. So if you had a dream in which someone you know came too close for comfort before baring a set of needle sharp fangs, your dream may be alerting you to someone who is feeding off your energy, or else sponging off your fiancé and thriving at your expense.... WISH-FULFILLMENT

The Element Encyclopedia
We all have aspirations and desires, and we may learn to stifle and even forget them because they seem impossible. Our dreaming mind, however, does not forget. The most typical dreams that are wish-fulfillment are ones that reflect our hopes in an obvious way. For example, if you are feeling tired and run down you may dream of being on a beach in Hawaii.

If you are attracted to someone in real life, you may dream about making love to them.

If you are apprehensive about retiring or getting older, you may dream of being a teenager or baby again.

If you are having financial troubles, you may dream of being surrounded by piles of cash or winning the lottery.

If you long to get married, you may dream of your wedding day or honeymoon.

If your fantasy is sexual variety, you may dream about visiting a prostitute or gigolo.

If you have your sights set on a promotion, you may dream of being the boss.

If you long to make your mark on the world, you may dream of becoming prime minister.

If you want to be famous, you may dream of yourself on the red carpet, writing a best-seller or singing before an audience of thousands of screaming fans.

If you dream of buying something you want or need in waking life, this is simple wishfulfillment but the dream is reminding you that satisfying your desires may cost you.

If you were buying food in your dream, you may be trying to buy someone’s affection in waking life.... The Element Encyclopedia

WOLF

Islamic Dream Interpretation
(Thief; Trifler; Womanizer; Year) In a dream, a wolf represents a fierce enemy, an unrelenting thief, or a liar.

If one sees a wolf entering his house in a dream, it means that a thief will burglarize his house and that he will chase and capture him.

If one sees himself raising a wolfs cub in a dream, it means that he will raise an abandoned child of a thief who upon growing up will bring that family much pain, suffering, divisiveness and loss of property. WOLF

A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences
Although the wolf can depict our sense that ‘things’ are out to get us, the wolf is often just fear. Fear is one of our insiinctive reactions to situations, so is depicted by an animal. We may find ourselves a pnsoner of such feelings, as Anna in the following example: ‘I was in a caravan in the middle of a field and in this field was a large black wolf. Every time I tried to run from the caravan to the edge of the field, the wolf chased me back, so I was a prisoner in the caravan. It all sounds so simple now, but at the time I was truly ternfied.’

This next example from Oliver, a boy of six, illustrates how such fears can be met with a little courage.

It is a dream which recurred several times, so his descnption is of a series of dreams: ‘1 am in my bed in my own room and I hear what I know to be a wolf wearing the son of clogs worn in Lancashire. He (the wolf) gets to a certain point, there is a bang, and I wake terrified. My mother’s reassurances do not help. Each night he gets a bit nearer before my panicky awakening.

The night comes when I know he will reach me. Sure enough he arrives, and the bedroom door—in my dream—is flung wide open with a tremendous bang. There is no one there. I never dreamt it again.’ Idioms: wolf at the door, wolf in sheep’s clothing; cry wolf, throw to the wolves. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

WOLF

Little Giant Encyclopedia
The male wolf is universally accepted as an image of Man, with reckless aggression and problems in sexual restraint. Considered a cunning, malicious predator, the concept of the wolf implies greed and hunger and, in that sense, physical urges and dissatisfaction. See Greed.

The wolf often symbolizes the shadow of male sexuality. Be glad to have had such a strong dream. You are powerful; you do not need to kill the wolf, hut you can dance with him.

In Steppenwolfy by Herman Hesse, the wolf becomes a symbol for the lonely seeker (and sufferer). Here it is not so much a reference to the meanness of the wolf, but rather the lonely search for the meaning of life.

In Christianity, the wolf is compared to the false prophet and heretic.

According to Jung, the wolf is wilder than the Lion and the Dog. Between 1910 and 1914, Sigmund Freud treated a patient who later would become famous as the “Wolfman.” As a small child this patient suffered from terrifying dreams about wolves, which was the reason why Freud gave him this name.

The earliest memories this man had about his nightmares involved six or seven White wolves that were sitting in a hazelnut tree in front of his window, and he was sure they had come to devour him. Freud here makes reference to two fairy tales: “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats.” In addition, Freud sees the wolf as a father substitute. As a young boy, the patient had observed his parents having intercourse from behind, and according to Freud, the patient transferred his repressed desire for sexual gratification by his father to a fear of wolves.

The female wolf symbolizes the nurturing power of nature, like Romulus and Remus, who were both nursed by a wolf. This is also the essence of the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood,” where the wolf is not only devouring Grandmother but he is Grandmother—the great mother symbol of wild nature.... WOLF

A Dictionary of Dream Symbols
(1) A wolf may symbolize all that you are afraid of in yourself, particularly what you see as ‘animal’, aggressive and destructive. Probably your fear is irrational and stems from a traumatic childhood experience (e.g. a desire for the parent of the opposite sex and resultant fear of punishment). This werewolf anxiety is a fairly common ingredient in literature: Hesse’s Steppenwolf is an example.

It is nearly always a consequence of repressed instinct, usually sexual. See also Introduction, page 43.

(2) In a woman’s dream it may symbolize male sexuality seen as threatening. Perhaps the dreamer needs to come to terms with her own sexuality. (This is probably the point of the original Red Riding Hood story; see Animal(s), section (6).)

(3) It may symbolize your unconscious, seen as something frightening. See also Animal(s)) It is just possible that the Christian symbolism of wolf as a devil, lamb(s) as Christian(s.) has found its way into your dream. In that case the dream may express a fear of losing your innocence (moral or sexual) or your sense of meaning and purpose in life, your belief system or convictions.... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

WOLF

Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia
The wolf is another symbol that may be regarded as either good or evil.

The fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood represents the onset of sexual maturity in young women, and the wolf represents the seductive “evil” male who tries to eliminate the protection of the wise old woman, Grandma.

The honorable “good” male figure of the woodcutter values the feminine principle by protecting Red with his strength.

The Native American values the wolf as a serene, majestic teacher, guide, and source of sacred wisdom. Some tribes relate the feminine lunar aspect of life to the wolf, while other tribal groups consider the wolf a strong warrior symbol for the male. Unless other dream elements point to a “big bad wolf ” interpretation, this dream symbol may well represent “good medicine.”... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia
