MOTHER

Nurturer, compassion.

The relationship that we have with our mother is the most psychologically significant relationship of all. Rarely all good or all bad, our mothers always invoke powerful emotions. We may dream about our mothers in many different forms. She may be disguised in our dreams, and it is our job to find her in there.

If you are dreaming about your mother, you may be addressing some issues or concerns in your dream, or your dream may be based on a valuable memory.

The general image of “mother” in a dream may symbolize a variety of feelings and ideas: caring, nurturing, love, acceptance, hard work, sacrifice, martyrdom, etc.

The mother in your dream could also represent the “collective unconscious,” the source of the “water of life,” and the yin. Carl Jung suggests that women in dreams represent our collective unconscious and men the collective consciousness. Thus, the woman is that force, or current, inside of you that nudges you on and inspires you.

It is your intuition and the knowledge that in not necessarily attached to words. Men, on the other hand, represent the active part of us that use the information received to create the physical reality of our lives. MOTHER

Your own nature, the archetypal feminine— life-giving, nurturing, devouring, protecting, that which is fruitful and fertile. When the mother in the dream is your real mother, it points to a bad conscience because of past behavior toward her. When the mother in the dream refers to the internal mother, it points to a desire for psychological support that is often not provided by a partner.

The mother in a dream, as well as in fairy tales, is often the helper whose strength, in a negative as well as positive sense, reaches beyond death. She is the Witch, the Wise Old One, who gives correct advice, the Earth and the goddess of the earth.

The symbol of the mother also addresses the task of self-discipline. Be a good mother to yourself and thereby become productive.

According to Jung, the mother is the archetypal symbol of “the secret, the hidden, the dark, the abyss, the temptation, the poisonous, and the inescapable.”... Little Giant Encyclopedia

MOTHER

Our relationship with mother is pivotal in our development and will often give rise to her appearance in dreams. Largely it is the first relationship we develop, probably should be perceived as a nurturing, caring one, and allows us to develop such relationships with other people.

If this does not happen, fears and doubts may arise. In a man’s life this may result in continually developing dependent relationships with older women, or denying his right to a relationship completely. His dreams may highlight this difficulty until such times as he is prepared to address the problem. As he grows to maturity he may experience dreams that highlight the loss of his mother. In a woman’s life, her relationship with her mother will colour all other relationships. Negatively, she may find herself pushed into nurturing the needy male, or in forming relationships with both men and women that do not satisfy her basic needs. There are many ways through dreams of working through relationships with mother, both symbolically and otherwise, and much can be gained by daring to take this step. Provided we have come to terms with and understood this relationship, much material and spiritual success can be achieved. Positive images of mothering and motherhood may also give us access to archetypal material that is connected with mother earth and our place in the world.... Dream Meanings of Versatile

MOTHER

Mothers in dreams usually invoke powerful emotions.

If you are dreaming about your mother, you may be addressing some real-life issues or concerns about your mother in your dream, or your dream may be based on a valuable memory.

If you dream of being a mother (and you don’t have children in real life), this foretells a surprising turn of events concerning a cause you believed to be lost.

The general image of “mother” in a dream may symbolize a variety of feelings and ideas: caring, nurturing, love, acceptance, hard work, sacrifice, etc.

The mother in your dream could also represent that force, or current, inside of you that nudges you on and inspires you.

It is your intuition and the knowledge that lives deep within your soul.

To dream that your mother is trying to hurt or kill you, probably reflects your anxiety over your real-life relationship with your mother. Something she has been doing - possibly restricting you in some way, or a way she behaves - threatens your emotional happiness. This dream can also come from feelings of guilt or anxiety about becoming more indepedent from your mother, as you grow older.

If you dream about your boyfriend’s mother, this is a postive sign, meaning that after much disagreement, things will be resolved in a pleasant and friendly manner. Dreams about mother are very common. Starting with childhood there is the dream of protection, love, and our very sustenance. These are the normal, happy dreams of contentment. One of the earliest interpretations of mother dreams where she is at home in a joyful mood, signifies pleasure and just rewards for the dreamer.

To dream of talking with her indicates anxiety.

To hear her calling you, sorrow because of her absence, or your guilty conscience.

To see her in an accident or dead is sometimes a wishful dream; she will not interfere. This last type of dream must be studied carefully because there would be symbols and surroundings that would round out the interpretation.... Psycho Dream Interpretation

MOTHER

The symbols of the mother have a remarkable versatility. On the one hand, the mother appears as an image of nature (i.e., life) and, conversely, as a representation of death (for the Egyptians, the vulture symbolized the mother). The mother relates to virtually all stages and circumstances of existence. It always represents our origin, our roots, security, shelter, warmth, tenderness, etc. At the same time, this symbol also appears when we die, that is, when we return to the bosom of Mother Earth.

Dreaming of this figure is usually more common during childhood. In adults, however, the maternal figure appears through indirect references. Often, those who fail to reach maturity still have these dreams. Acts of rebellion against the mother are also frequent. These episodes manifest adolescent dissatisfaction, the need for independence, and the desire to break away from the maternal ties. A dream of this kind can occur at any age. On the other hand, Freud referred to the Greek myth of Oedipus, who killed his father to marry his mother. According to the psychoanalyst, Oedipus was driven to this crime by incestuous desire and envy of his father. As for women, Freud believed that their feelings of inferiority were based on the jealousy they felt toward men. (See COAT, WHITE, FOUNTAIN, INCEST, and MOON)

MOTHER

[DREAM IMAGES: MATRIARCH, MOTHER NATURE]

The mother archetype appears in many forms—mother, princess and witch— and is symbolized by the primordial mother, or ‘earth mother’, of mythology, by Eve and Mary in Western traditions, and by less personal symbols, such as the church, the nation, a forest or the ocean. According to Jung, someone whose own mother failed to satisfy the demands of the archetype may well be one that spends his or her life seeking comfort in the church, or in identification with ‘the motherland’, or in meditating upon the figure of Mary, or in a life at sea. In dreams, mother figures suggest nurturing aspects of ourselves and others, or the need for greater compassion and selflessness; they can, however, also suggest the shadow side, which is overprotection, abandonment, cruelty and abuse. Bear in mind that the qualities that are associated with this archetype can be expressed in other than biological ways, such as giving birth to books or ideas, or nurturing others. MOTHER

A dream about your mother may be telling you something about your relationship with your mother. Mother-attachment may be so strong that the development of your own individuality has been stalled. Gaining inner independence from your mother is the first great step towards realizing your true self. The mother may symbolize the unconscious, intuitive part of yourself. This, however, can take a positive or a negative form. She may appear as a kindly mother or aunt, or as a place such as a cave, church or garden; all these images represent the qualities of growth, nourishment and fertility. In her negative form, a mother may appear as a witch or a dragon, and represent dark, destructive tendencies that can devour and destroy.

Freud believed that the Greek myths of Oedipus and Electra symbolized psychological conditions. Oedipus killed his father and married his mother and Freud claimed this represented a boy’s incestuous desire for his mother and his jealousy towards his father. Electra desired her father and was jealous of her mother. A girl may therefore believe she has been castrated by her mother and is an incomplete male. According to Freud this gave rise to penis envy; the root cause of women’s so- called feelings of inferiority. Freud’s Oedipus complex theory is no longer accepted today but there is no doubt that the mother relationship is the first pivotal relationship in a child’s life and it should be a nurturing, loving and supportive one. Jungians associate her with the Great mother archetype that influences our psychological growth. Each of us has a fundamental, perhaps instinctive drive to bond with a woman at birth and if that bonding does not happen much of what would be considered normal development cannot or does not take place. So mother sometimes represents the survival instinct and what happens in those early years of trying to becoming independent of such needs. In a man’s life if these needs are not met this may result in dependent relationships with older women or inability to commit long term to a relationship. In a woman’s life her relationship with her mother will impact all other relationships and if it is lacking in some way she may find herself nurturing needy males or in forming unsatisfying relationships with both men and women. Scenarios involving the mother figure in dreams are therefore one way of working through and moving forward from these issues. Of course, a dream about your mother could also be just that: a straightforward depiction of the woman who gave us life. How she appears may point to issues in your upbringing or current relationship. Is she proud of you or angry?... The Element Encyclopedia

MOTHER MARY, QUAN YIN

This is an archetypal character aspect that represents the healing that occurs through the principles of love and compassion. While there are many other archetypal representations of the power of love, this entry will limit itself to these two, as they are perhaps the most widely recognized symbols of divine forgiveness in the history of the human race. In dream work, they should be treated symbolically as archetypes, and their appearance in a dream indicates that you are experiencing a high level of self-discovery and integration. Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Quan Yin, Buddhist goddess of mercy and compassion, embody the feminine principle in its highest evolution.

The feminine principle connects to the power of love and receptivity. Both of these figures are revered by millions as the purveyors of forgiveness and unconditional love. Though the traditions that created each of them could not be more different, what they offer to those who turn to them in their hour of need is exactly the same. One of the most difficult challenges that all human beings face is the process of forgiveness, and the ability to forgive one’s self is particularly elusive.

The human mind is not built for unconditional love, even though it is a concept that many who travel the path of service continually strive to achieve. No matter how she may appear to you, the archetype of the divine mother can help you inch your way out of shame and resentment and move toward the healing that can only come through love and mercy.

The appearance of one of these great figures in a dream is to put you on notice that you are in a moment of elevating consciousness and self-integration.

It is not uncommon for any archetypal figure to be silent in a dream; it is their mere presence that embodies the impact of the dream.

If words and messages are present in the dream, take them to heart and do so literally. However, if this is not the case, your best use of such a dream is silent gratitude for the gift of such a powerful experience of elevated consciousness.

PEARL

(1) Pearls have associations with water, shells and the moon (same shape and colour), all of which are symbols of the feminine in its positive, creative aspects. A pearl may therefore signify new life; a possibility of personal growth. In a woman’s dream it may even, by its resemblance to a foetus, represent pregnancy. See also Moon, Shell, Water.

(2) It may be a symbol of the self: personal wholeness, in which conscious and unconscious halves of the psyche are united (cf. the New Testament ‘pearl of great price’, the finding of which is worth the sacrifice of everything else).... A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

PEARL

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said: “The sage wears coarse garb, but in his chest hides a jewel.” The situation can be extrapolated to the pearl hidden in an oyster, that is, to the spiritual perfection that is hidden under the shell. On the other hand, the pearl also represents the feminine, love, and beauty. When it is in jewelry or necklaces, indicates material grandeur and exhibitionism. And if, in the dream, a pearl necklace breaks and they are scattered it means that something has been dismantled in our waking lives. Possibly reveals your fear of not finally getting that for which you fought so much. (See SHELL) Threading pearls on a necklace is a harbinger of loneliness. ... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

PEARL DIVER

A pearl diver in a dream represents a royalty, a great person, or a man of authority. Diving into the seawater to catch pearls in a dream means entering into a business with someone in authority, then marrying a daughter from his family and begetting a beautiful son from her. Seeing a pearl diver in a dream also means seeking to learn about something, or seeking to borrow money from a merchant, or asking someone in authority for an important appointment, or it could mean adventuring into the business of treasure hunting.

A pearl diver in a dream also represents someone who knows the inside secrets of things, or he could be a scholar, a gnostic, a seeker on the path, or an interpreter of the true meanings of the early prophetic teachings.

PEARL NECKLACE

(Covenant; Husband; Qur’im; Wisdom) A pearl necklace in a dream represents woman’s beauty and ornaments.

A pearl necklace, or a necklace made of corals in a dream also means piety, fear of wrongdoing, or an expression of reverence before God Almighty. All of that is subject to the value, beauty and clarity of the necklace, or the number of gems it holds. As for a woman, a pearl necklace in a dream represents her husband, or her young son.

If a man sees himself wearing a pearl necklace in a dream, it means that he is a seeker of knowledge, spiritual understanding and wisdom. It could also mean fulfilling a covenant, making a promise, or getting married.

If one’s wife is pregnant, it means that she will give birth to a son who will grow to be a wise person, a man of knowledge, or ajudge. This interpretation is possible in most cases except if the necklace breaks in the dream. In this case, if the necklace is broken, it means that one will break his promise, or forget his learning, become heedless, suffer eviction, deportation, or be exiled from his home or country.

If one sees himself wearing one or even two pearl necklaces in a dream, it means that he subscribes to God’s revelations, memorizes God’s Words, recites the holy Qur’iin, speaks words of wisdom, and that he is one of the carriers of the divine trust who demonstrates trustworthiness, piety, trueness, religious commitment and beauty of character. All depending on the beauty, radiance and clarity of one’s necklace.

If one sees himself in a dream carrying many necklaces and decorations, and if he finds them heavy and unbearable to carry, it represents his incompetence, or his inability to complete a job.

PEARLS

General Meaning: Since the beginning of time, pearls have been a picture of beauty and wealth.

• Pearls are a lovely picture of a hidden treasure waiting to be found, but also something that is bought at great expense.

Visions Positive:

In Scripture, pearls speak of wealth and an object of trade. Of course the parable of the businessman who sells all he has for the one pearl is a famous one.

• Matthew 13:46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

• A pearl is something that was usually bought at a great price, and if you owned one, it was an object that was precious and of high value.

• It is also a picture of the church, as Jesus had used this parable to explain how He would pay all he had, even His life, for the church, which was His precious pearl.

• If you see the Lord giving you a pearl, it means that He is giving you a gift that will increase in value and is something precious.

• It is something that came at a great price to purchase. And it is a lovely picture of the blessing and prosperity that we can walk in, because of the price Jesus paid on the cross.

• If you see the pearl still in the oyster, then it means that the Lord is giving you a blessing, but you will need to do something to get it.

Negative: The Scripture below is another famous one.

To cast your pearls before swine, means taking those things that you paid such a great price for and giving them to people who do not appreciate it.

• This can often happen in ministry, just as Jesus experienced it.

• The calling and the mandate God gives someone comes at a great price. It costs you your life and many phases of death to the flesh. Your calling becomes a treasure in your life.

• When you give out to people who do not care to receive it, but only seek to condemn, you are handing something precious over to them that they do not deserve.

• Reserve your ministry for those who are open to receive, just as Jesus did.

• Matthew 7:6 Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, neither cast your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and tear you apart.

THE GREAT MOTHER

The symbols are Virgin Mary, sometimes one’s own mother, a divine female, an old or ageless woman, the Earth, a blue grotto, the sea, a whale, a cave. Whatever the image, it often contains great religious feeling or spiritual uplift. After all, our mother was the most powerful being in our early world. Did she admire hunters? Then we would kill dragons and cleanse the world. Did she feel the weight of the world? Then we would be the peacemaker and bring her joy.

The symbols of mother represent not simply our relationship with her, but also how it influences our own growth towards independence. As a baby our consciousness of self does not feel separate from mother.

The gradual separation of the sense of self is difficult. In some people it is never managed, even though they separate physically. Their mother, or their sense of their mother within them, still directs their decisions.

The old joke about My mother wouldn’t like this’ is true. In many older cultures this break was worked out in ritual tribal custom. Today we have to manage these subtleties of our psyche alone.

A woman must find a way of transforming the pleasure—or absence of it—of her mother’s breast into a love for a male.

If she cannot she may wish to return to the breast of another female, or be the man her father never was for her.

A man must find a way of transforming his unconscious desire for his mother into love of a woman which is more than a dependent or demanding baby or youth.

If he cannot he may seek his mother in a likely woman, ignoring who that woman is as a real person. And the acceptance of our mother as she really is—a human being—precedes the acceptance of ourself as we really are.

The symbols of the Great Mother hold in them our awareness, unconscious as it may be, of the forces of nature active in us. These forces, in the guise often of a beautiful woman dancing or beckoning, are both wonderful and dangerous.

The dance of nature is unconscious.

If we get in its way we will be ground under its heel as it dances on its beautiful way.

To meet this aspect of ourself we must be both admiring and resourceful.

The danger for a man might be that he loses himself in desire for all women or one woman, for a woman, that she becomes a spiritual whore, thinking she can uplift all through her womb. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences
