Because of its mysterious transmogrification from a caterpillar, the butterfly is a universal symbol for intense transformation, usually for the better.

If the butterfly is in the egg stage, the coming change is still but an idea. In the larva stage, a decision needs to be made. In the cocoon stage, you are working to make your dreams a reality.

An adult butterfly flying in the air indicates sharing, or the need to share, your ideas with the world.... Dream Explanations of Astro Center

Out of the four elements, air and fire are considered active and masculine, while water and earth are passive and feminine. In elementary cosmogony, sometimes fire is considered the primordial source of all things, but the belief in the air as foundation is more widespread. At the oneiric level, air refers to communication, reason, logic, and, above all, imagination. Dreaming that you are being transported through air indicates that you begin to clearly see your own issues and that you are moving away from those problems. Air, in fact, helps to establish a balance between actions and emotions.

If the air is cold, you might be unfairly judging someone close who appreciates you. On the other hand, if it is humid air (or steam) it means that you are not thinking clearly so your decisions may be wrong. Breeze, moreover, is inspiring spirit and life-giving force.

Clean and clear air, since ancient times, is an omen of serene prosperity, happiness, and luck, as well as friendship and reconciliation. However, for some old books of dreams, dreaming of air means our hopes will vanish.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

Dreams in which you are fighting to breathe are usually to do with a sense that the external environment, or your inner attitudes or fears, are threatening to kill your pleasure in living. Dreams in which you feel you are being choked or strangled may suggest that that there is something in waking life that is choking, strangling or squeezing the life out of you—a job, a relationship or a situation.

You feel stifled by people or circumstances and are not in control of either. Choking in dreams also suggests an inability to express yourself properly in waking life. There may be some kind of conflict or indecision about whether or not you should speak out or hold your tongue.

If you struggled to breathe in a smoggy or smoke-filled atmosphere of a polluted dream environment, this could suggest that you are finding your reallife circumstances claustrophobic and stifling to your individuality and personal growth. Or do you feel that the demands of your job or lifestyle are killing your curiosity and creativity? If you were strangled by someone, this suggests you may be holding back feelings as most of our feelings create sounds, such as laughter or crying; an attack on the neck is thus an attempt to stifle these emotions. Whatever you decide caused you to fight for air in your dream, be it a positive or a negative influence, your unconscious was probably warning you to broaden your horizons and let some metaphorical ‘fresh air’ into your life.
