NOTE

It should be noted that when relating a dream it should be done without adding anything to it or subtracting anything from it. For, if a person does this he spoils and corrupts the dream. Moreover, Rasoolullah (Sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) has strongly prohibited anyone from doing this.

His also reported as saying that anyone who invents a lie linking it to him or his (own) father or friend, he will not even smell the sweet fragrance of Jannah.

His also reported as saying: “There are three persons whom Allah will punish severely on the Day of Qiyaamah : a person who relates a false dream : he will be made to tie a knot between two grains of barley which he will never be able to do; a man who paints a picture of animate objects; he will be made to put life into them which he will never be able to do; a man who leads a people in Salaah while they dislike him”.

It is advisable for a person who sees an unpleasant or disturbing dream that he spits thrice on his left side as soon as he wakes up and thereafter seek Allah’s protection from the accursed devil. Rasoolullah (sallallaahu-alayhi-wasallam) and his followers used to do likewise.... Islamic Dream Interpretation

LUGGAGE

1- Luggage in a dream can be slightly different to baggage in that luggage will symbolise what we feel is necessary to have us go forward. It can be those habits and emotions which have helped us in the past, but which can now be reappraised before being ‘repackaged’.

2- When luggage appears as a symbol in our dreams we should perhaps look at whether it is ours or someone else’s.

If ours, it signifies those views, altitudes and behaviours which we have brought through from the past.

If it is someone else’s, then we may be looking at family or global concepts which no longer are useful to us.

3- Spiritually if we are to travel ‘light’ we must often find a way of unburdening ourselves. Luggage in a dream can help us to envisage this.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

SOAP

1- Soap in dreams suggests the idea of being cleanscd. We perhaps need to create an environment of cleanliness both of physical cleanliness and appropriate behaviour. Often in emerging sexual dreams soap can appear as an image of ejaculated semen.

2- Psychologically soap can indicate a need to clean up our act. We may feel a sense of having been made dirty by an experience and situation and our dream mind is alerting us to the fact that we need to deal with it.

3- Again, on a spiritual level, soap represents cleansing. There is a creative visualisation which can be carried out if we feel our space has been invaded.

The dreamers should envisage themselves scrubbing down the walls of a room three times in order to cleanse il (remembering to ‘throw away’ the water or let it drain away). Once is for the physical, once emotional, once spiritual. Following this, there will be a feeling of lightness.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

STAGE

also see Theatre

1- I’o be on stage in a dream is to be making oneself visible.

An open-air stage suggests communication with the masses rather than a selected audience.

A moving stage signifies the need to keep moving, even while performing a role.

If we are members of the audience we need to be aware of the plot of the play and how it mav be relevant to us.

1- To be at a stage (of development, for instance) is to be cognisant of what one knows, but also what one docs not.

If a project or an idea reaches a certain stage, we can envisage the potential for success.

2- Spiritually a stage is a representation of our own life play. We are able to observe and be objective about what is going on. By externalising the ‘play’ into a framework we can manipulate our lives.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

SWALLOWING

Dreaming of swallowing one’s pride signifies the necessity for humility, whilst something being hard to swallow shows that we have a need to overcome an obstacle.

2- When we arc holding back on emotion, we physically need to swallow. Swallowing therefore becomes an act of suppression which can be harmful.

EYES

(see Body, Face)

As the window of the soul, these reveal truth to us. So, how do the eyes appear? Are they fully open to see things as they are really?

Judgment from others, or judging yourself for specific actions or words. In Hindu tradition, the Goddess could create or destroy the Universe with a blink of her eye. Similarly, in Syria and Mediterranean regions, the all-seeing eyes of the Goddess symbolized truth and the universal laws from which no one could hide.

The shape and size of the eyes may hold import.

For example, very small eyes that appear closed in the dream indicate someone who is small-minded and unwilling to look at alternative viewpoints.

Various conditions in eyesight also have specific meanings. Being nearsighted indicates the need to extend your perspective, whereas farsightedness suggests that you should take a closer look at things. Tunnel vision equates to being so focused on a goal that you neglect to see other potential opportunities and angles through which you might succeed. Finally, having cataracts is a kind of blindness dream, where vision is partially or totally impeded.

Eye of Horus: Wisdom within the mind, and the power of knowledge to help us see and understand things more clearly.

Third Eye (center of the forehead): The psychic nature and transcendent universal awareness.

If you see only the right eye in your dream, this represents the sun, whereas seeing only the left represents the moon (as is seen in the eyes of Mithras).

Squinted eyes represent avoiding the sun —the logical, rational, conscious mind and thought processes. Alternatively, this can symbolize looking at something very closely.

Pop-eyed visages: Abundant surprise, excitement, or fear.

Two different-colored eyes: In earlier times a person with two differently colored pupils was thought to be able to administer the evil eye. Is there someone looking at you with malicious intent, or perhaps selfish motivations?

Wearing glasses in your dream indicates impaired vision that has somehow been corrected. However, if the glasses are tinted, check to see if you aren’t looking at a situation or person through “rose-colored glasses.”... The Language of Dreams

ICONS

(see Ascetic, Authority Figures, Parents, Religions)

A god or goddess: Each varies here by the specific visage seen, but ecumenically any such appearance indicates a higher consciousness, morality, and the divine spark within each of us.

Christ: An image of healing, forgiveness, protection, and renewal.

If crucified, an emblem of martyrdom, or giving too much of yourself (see Cross, Sacrifice).

Buddha: Introspection.

The path of positive speech and acting in accord.

Gandhi: Empowerment that comes from knowing your own mind.

A just cause fought for without violence. Peaceful negotiations.

A guru: Looking for, and dependence upon, spiritual insights from other people. Remember that your own heart is the best guru to guide your life.

Mother Teresa: The highly underestimated power of gentility, kindness, and compassion.

Moses: Redemption that first requires the trying of your beliefs.

A wizard: Mastery over the elements, and the ability to foresee the consequences of actions. Alternatively, a stage magician represents trickery and illusion meant to fool people.

King Arthur: Wise and peaceful leadership. Having a real understanding of equity.

Merlin: A tutorial image from your Higher Self who helps you see things differently, from a more metaphysical perspective.

Kings and queens: People, situations, or ideals in your life that have some authority over you.

The questions to ponder here are how much control do they have and how healthy is it for you? Look at other elements in the dream to determine this. Alternatively, these may be reflections of your own Higher Self, and self-rulership.

Mary: An alternative image of the primordial goddess, who through obedience and faith gave birth to the Messiah.... The Language of Dreams

PILLARS

(see Archway, Buildings, Concrete, Stones)

While these are sometimes considered phallic due to their shape, in ancient Greece pillars were regularly carved in the shape of a woman whose visage was modeled after a priestess of the Moon Goddess. In this form, pillars can emphasize the need to balance gender-specific outlooks, or to accept the traits you exhibit from the opposite gender as a building block to your whole personality.

What do these pillars uphold? If, for example, they support a temple roof, this implies having strong foundations and evidence for your beliefs. However, cracking and decayed pillars reflect a belief system that you have outgrown, but not left behind.

Ancient Egyptian: A hieroglyph called the Pillars of Horus was placed on the walls of homes to keep negativity away from the residents. Such symbols inscribed on your dream’s buildings may represent feelings of oppression or danger from which you wish to protect yourself and your kin.

CIRCULAR MOVEMENT

(1) If in the dream you are moving round a central object, this may mean you are becoming aware - or are being asked to become aware - of your true self. Plotinus, a third-century mystic and philosopher, wrote: The soul will therefore move around the centre, that is, around the principle from which she proceeds; and, tending towards it, she will attach herself to it, as indeed all souls should do.’ The centre, for Plotinus, is both self and God, but names do not matter; the main thing is to envisage the centre as holding the secret of your ‘destiny5 - your personal ground-plan.

(2) Going round in circles (without a centre) means not achieving anything. The important thing is to ask yourself why. The answer is almost certainly that you have been ‘barking up the wrong tree5, and the reason for this is almost certainly that your self-image is not an accurate one and needs correction or amplification.

(3) The circle may be a Vicious circle5, signifying that you are (or feel) trapped in a situation that can only get worse. However, this is not true; you can always break the seemingly inevitable chain of cause and effect by introducing a new cause, a new source of energy - derived from the unconscious.... ABBEY

All religious buildings in dreams can be interpreted, roughly, in the same manner. The abbey symbolizes questions or concerns—in the intellectual, moral or spiritual realm of our life—that are about to emerge. When a building appears in a dream, it usually represents the dreamer herself, her body, or the different levels of her mind. An abbey is a sacred place and not lavish, like your true Self.

If the abbey is old, it is advisable to consult the old stories of the Celtic tradition and the first Christians; their valuable knowledge will favor your spiritual awakening.

Although almost all faiths believe dreaming of an abbey is a good omen, there are some different superstitions. When the dreamer is a young woman, this dream predicts disease. And, if the abbey is in ruins, it means that your plans will fail. However, if the path to access it is blocked, you will be safe from a painful mistake.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

ABYSS

The majority of primitive peoples understood abysses as various deep marine or terrestrial features. To the Celts, the abyss was found inside the mountain; in Ireland and Japan it was located at the bottom of the sea or lakes; and among the Mediterranean peoples it was beyond the horizon. Each individual has their own problems and own daily abyss (in which they occasionally fall victim to anxiety). Conflictive situations, if not addressed promptly, can become “abysmal.” Thus, this dream represents you are on the verge of something but you are afraid to take the plunge.

It is important to find out what that fear is about and why you feel so bad. When the abyss is dark it likely symbolizes your unknown Self.

If you are also anxious, you will not be pleased about what your feelings and hidden fears have to tell you. Dreams about abysses are often accompanied by vertigo. This vertigo can be physical if you are lying on the edge of the bed; emotional, when you are unable to control your feelings about others; existential, due to absence of goals that give your life meaning; or directly related to your circumstances, perhaps because you need to make a decision without knowing which option is best. In the latter case, it is advisable to take enough time and choose well, thus avoiding any type of precipitation.

Usually an abyss forecasts financial difficulties. You must be very careful with any deals being considered in the next few the days. According to ancient beliefs, this dream portends problems in love, work, or health.

It is recommended to be cautious.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

ANXIETY

No one has yet discovered the function of dreams in our lives. Some scientists believe that we sleep in order to dream, because dreams tidy all our emotions. Different experiments have shown that people who are sleep deprived present greater emotional disorders (for example, a disproportionate anxiety). Dreams, therefore, bring the psychological balance back.

It is very common to have dreams that express anxiety and emotions that you cannot channel in real life. According to Freud, they show repressed aggression and resentment. Many of those, in fact, come from the subject’s childhood. So wherever this oneiric anxiety appears, it is advisable to seek the hidden feelings that really cause it.

Some beliefs state that anxiety dreams indicate exactly the opposite. In other words, it won’t be long until your concerns are resolved. And, in a sense, when the individual expresses their fears in dreams, they get closer to their dissipation.... The Big Dictionary of Dreams

RED

In waking life red is associated with fire, heat, blood and passion. In dreams, these ‘hot’ themes are often mirrored and the interpretation is typically connected with passion, energy or vitality. Red is also associated with anger and rage towards something or someone, and, through its association with fire, can represent danger and prohibition. This is reflected in the red ‘stop’ signs of many countries’ traffic-control systems. The color also indicates the angry urge to fight back and, if you are experiencing such violent emotions and you dream of red, take it as a warning to exercise restraint, or the consequences will be tragic.

Revenge or retaliation is not advisable.

If red features in your dream, perhaps you should consider the tone that was being used. Lighter shades of red can be representative of excitement (especially sexual), passion, energy, and life. However, deeper or ‘weighed- down’ shades of red may be indicative of the overheated emotions of lust and anger, and the impulsive desire for revenge. Notice again how the ‘stop’ sign is red; red can thus be seen as a hint from your subconscious to stop acting in a particular way.

Because red is the color of blood, it may also denote physical strength, vital energy and the life force which, depending on the context of the dream, may be ebbing away or throbbing with life. A red heart may stand for deep-seated sexual energy or desire in waking life, red ears may suggest embarrassment or guilt, whilst a red nose is often thought to indicate an inquisitive nature. Red flames are believed to indicate the threat of danger, red wine is often linked to feelings of satisfaction and contentment, and a red rose is typically tied to the idea of romance and passion. Who was holding the red rose in your dream?

Other considerations to take into account include whether the red in your dream suggests being ‘in the red’ (in debt), or brings to mind a person who holds socialists beliefs (a red). It can also refer to a scarlet (sexually permissive) woman, or to waving the proverbial red flag at something, or someone, who provoked you. Keywords: danger, shame, sexual impulses, passion and urges.

Perhaps you need to stop and think about your actions.... The Element Encyclopedia

CAR

Dream cars can symbolize the image or persona you are trying to project to others; this can be sleek and powerful, or practical and powerful. Whenever a car appears in your dream, the first thing to do is to consider your personal associations with that car.

If you do not envisage yourself owning this particular car, ask yourself why your dreaming mind selected it. What does it say about you? The answer should tell you a lot about your character, your self-image and your driving force or ambition. Dream cars can also represent yourself and your ability to control your life.

Are you a good driver in your dream? If you are, this suggests you are in control of your life.

If you drive badly, however, your unconscious may be warning you that you are making too many mistakes and heading for an emotional crash.

If a back-seat driver appears in your dream, could this represent someone who is trying to influence your life? Is someone else driving the car? Do you feel that this person is controlling your life or influencing you? Your dream may be expressing your dependence and lack of control. Pay attention to the people you are driving as this might suggest your feelings of responsibility towards them.

If you are not driving, are you happy to be driven by someone else?

If a dream car symbolizes your persona, then the steering wheel represents your conscious mind, and the engine and gas your unconscious, or your inner power and energy.

If your dream journey was smooth, this suggests stamina and energy, or to Freudians, progress in psychoanalysis. A bumpy road suggests anxieties arising from the unconscious.

If you broke down or ran out of petrol, this suggests that you are on the verge of depleting your physical, financial or emotional resources.

If you have a dream in which you are speeding or get a speeding fine, this suggests your pace of life is way too fast or that you are living life in the fast lane. Are you in danger of losing control? Your dreaming mind may be urging you to slow down—particularly if brakes feature in the dream.

If any other part of your dream car was featured, you can draw a parallel with your waking life. For example, if a tire was punctured, do you feel deflated? If the pedals were not working properly, do you need more energy to make further progress in waking life? If car wheels appear in your dream, this is a call to action.
