ADLER, ALFRED (1870-1937)

Born in Vienna, Austria. Studied medicine, later became a disciple of Freud. Diverged from Freud over the sexual impulse being all important in human behaviour. Adler saw people as goal oriented, with an urge toward personal growth and wholeness. He stated that in dreams we can clearly see our aggressive impulses and desire for fulfilment. Dreams can also help the dreamer define two often conflicting aspects of their experience—their image or sense of themselves, and their sense of what is socially acceptable. Because we strive from our earliest years to have some control over ourself and surroundings, we may develop a style of life around a sense of inferiority or lack of power. So a person who feels vulnerable may become aggressive to compensate. Adler therefore felt that in our dreams we not only see what we think of ourself, and what our environmental situation is, but also find a definition of our techniques for satisfying our drive to deal with and succeed in the world.... ALFRED ADLER

Alfred Adler (1870–1937) was an Austrian psychiatrist who developed a personality theory referred to as individual psychology. He was at one time closely associated with Sigmund Freud, but broke with Freud to develop his own form of psychotherapy. Adler placed much less emphasis on dreams than other schools of psychiatry, and his attitude toward dreams is somewhat inconsistent. Even though he did not develop a full-blown theory of dreams, his thoughts on this subject had a significant influence on later dream theorizing.

To oversimplify the difference between Freud and Adler, Freud focused on sex and aggression and Adler focused on power and status. Adler viewed much human motivation as originating during the lengthy period of child- hood, when we are relatively powerless to control our lives. In response to this feeling of helpless- ness, the human being, according to Adler, develops a powerful urge to master his or her world. This desire for control and mastery becomes the central drive in human life.

Dreams would clearly have a different significance for Adler than they had for Freud. In Freudian theory, dreams are fundamentally arenas within which inner tensions, many of them safely hidden from view in the unconscious, could be safely discharged. Often these tensions have roots in infantile conflicts, making dreams pasoriented. For Adler, on the other hand, dreams become part of the larger project of the individual to master his or her life. In particular, dreams come about as a result of an effort—whether that effort is effective or not—to anticipate future situations, so as to allow us to imaginatively prepare for them. Although dreams are intended to help the dreamer acquire more control over his or her world, Adler recognized that many dreams are maladaptive, in the sense that, if one were to actu- ally follow their guidance, the practical results would be to detract from, rather than enhance, the goal of mastery over one’s environment.

Adler’s views provide a radically different perspective on dreams from Freud’s. For Freud dreams serve to discharge inner tensions originat- ing in the past and hidden in the unconscious, whereas for Adler the function of dreams is to anticipate the future. Also, one of the results of Adler’s portrayal of dreams is to make them more related to the thoughts and motivations of waking consciousness, in marked contrast to Freud’s portrayal, which emphasizes the disjunction between the waking and the dreaming state. Adler’s ideas, particularly as developed and for- mulated by later theorists, have influenced many contemporary therapists.... Dreampedia

Hat. Consciousness and thinking. Are you living too much in your head? It also addresses the fact that you keep something hidden or that something seems to be hidden.

The verb “to cap” also points to completion, the end of a situation. In fables and fairy tales, the cap often plays a significant role as a magical covering for the head, allowing the person to become invisible. It also points to the fact that you may be too visible. Or that you might pay more attention to yourself and be more outgoing. See Shadow.

CAPTURING YOUR DREAMS: HOW TO RECALL AND RECORD

“Dreams are illustrations...from the book your soul is writing about you.”
Marsha Norman

We all dream several dreams a night and it’s been suggested that we each have 100,000 dreams over the course of our lives. So you might be wondering why you can’t remember a single one. Medications, alcohol, too little sleep and anxiety about the content of our dreams can all block dream recall.

We’re most likely to remember the dreams closest to awakening, but with a little effort you can boost your dream recall. In fact the more attention you pay to your dreams, by thinking about them, writing them down, working with them, the more likely you are to remember them. Keeping a note pad and a pen beside your bed and recording your dreams immediately on waking is one of the best ways to help your dream recall.

Some dreams fade quickly from memory, so it is crucial you capture them as soon as you can. Immediately on waking, write down your dream or dreams —even if this is in the middle of the night; don’t brush your teeth first or leave it until your alarm clock goes off. If you do that, you’ll probably forget all about it and will lose a valuable dream. If you record your dreams in words, you create permanent reminders that you can use to help you figure out what they are trying to tell you.

Later in the day, transfer the information to a dream diary, specifically set aside for your dreams. In this diary include: the date of your dream, any people involved, the moods and feelings expressed, prominent colors, numbers, or shapes, the problems and conflicts encountered, prominent symbols or stories, information about the dream landscape, whether it was past, present or future and, finally, how the dream ended.

With practice, you will soon get the hang of remembering and writing down your dreams. Use this encyclopedia to help you unlock the meaning of your dream themes and symbols, but never forget that the best book you will ever read about dreams is the one you write yourself: your dream journal.

Programing your mind for dream recall

Some dreams are so vivid you can’t forget them but many are so fleeting they can vanish without a trace. One way to make sure you remember them is to talk to yourself in a positive way. Before going to sleep tell yourself that you will remember your dreams on waking. Try this visualization technique.

When you feel sleepy, turn off the lights and settle down in your favorite sleeping position. In a relaxed way, think about your dreams. Breathe in for a count of five, and out for a count of ten. Repeat this, and then breathe normally. Now imagine you have just woken in the morning and, as you slowly move back into consciousness, you reach for your pen and write down your dream. Bring your attention to the present again, and feel comfortable, warm and sleepy. Tell yourself that in the morning you will remember your dreams.... Dreampedia

CARNELIAN-RED

(arb. ‘Aqiq. A variety of chalcedony; Crystalline mineral; Gem; Jewelry; Precious stone; Stone) Seeing a Carnelian-red stone in a dream means dispelling poverty. At the beginning of the creation, of all stones, the Carnelianred was the first stone that testified to God’s Oneness.

If one sees himself in a dream concluding his ablution or ritual bath with the essence of a Carnelianred, it means that he owns something blessed. Such blessings will manifest in one’s work and success in his material as well as spiritual life.

A Carnelian-red stone in a dream also represents one’s progeny, good religious conduct, good character, while seeing the white variety of this stone has a stronger meaning 70 and a better attribute than the red.

Depth Psychology: See Furniture, Chair, Sofa. Chalice

Vision: Seeing a chalice: great sorrow ahead. Drinking from a chalice: joy and calm waters are yours right now. Breaking a chalice: bad news will spoil your fun.

Depth Psychology: The chalice symbolizes the “vessel of your soul, “ where all your emotions, hopes, and desires reside and of which you are only partly aware. If you did, were the streets friendly and welcoming, and the buildings clean and bursting with life and activity, or did you feel unwelcome, jostled about and intimidated by the place? According to Jung, places in dreams where people group together to live and work, such as cities, towns and villages, refer to how you perceive yourself within the community, and how well you are fitting in. So if you dreamed that you felt happy and secure in your dream city, the chances are you relate well to other members of the community in waking life. But if the buildings on the sidewalk or pavement seemed to close in on you, or you were wandering around hopelessly lost, perhaps you are feeling intimidated by others in waking life and have lost your sense of direction, or even identity.

If the city was abandoned like a ghost town, does this mirror your feelings of isolation in waking life?... The Element Encyclopedia

DECAPITATION

This dream suggests that the dreamer is losing control. In a decapitation there is a dramatic and violent separation of the head from the body. Under normal circumstances the mind controls and directs the body. This dream suggests that the dreamer may be under the control of his bodily drives and may be separated from rational thoughts and feelings. DECAPITATION

Dreams of being beheaded are not usually omens of death or even of punishment, although they may indicate anxiety about punishment. Because of the complexity of symbolism associated with the head, decapitation can have a wide variety of different meanings, from losing touch with one’s emotions (a split between the mind and the body) to losing control (as in the expression “losing one’s head”).

DISEASED, DISMEMBERED, INJURED AND DEFORMED BODY

If the body is diseased in a dream, this suggests a sickness of attitude or it could simply indicate extreme emotional and physical fatigue. A dismembered body indicates emotional and mental distress; perhaps you are tearing yourself apart over something or someone, or your life is falling apart. Half a body dream images suggest a lack of balance in your life between your outer and inner life.

If the top half of your body is missing, this indicates lack of reasoning and emotional intelligence.

If the bottom half is missing, this relates to loss, or denial of instincts and sexuality.

If the body is injured or you see injuries, this suggests emotional scars or hurts, or repressed anger.

If the body is cut open, this indicates a vital change within yourself or the release of emotional tension.

In times past, such dreams were interpreted as the release of ‘evil spirits’, hence the association of a sometimes painful release of tension.

Loss of limbs in a body usually indicates a sense of inadequacy, sometimes connected with the limb that is lost. For example, loss of legs could suggest an inability to stand up for yourself or someone dependent on you. Loss of an arm could indicate an inability to influence other people, or to give and receive.

If your body is burnt in the dream, this suggests an emotional scar, and if the burn is painful, this suggests that you are relating to this hurt in an unhelpful, self-destructive way. If, however, the burning isn’t painful, it has a more positive interpretation: feelings of potential and new beginnings.

Marks on the body in a dream suggest things you carry with you in life, or experiences that have marked you.

If your body is crawling with maggots, this indicates the need to cleanse your body of toxins, infection or resentment. A murdered body in a dream represents aspects of your life that you find hard to deal with, such as anger towards a family member. Sometimes such anger may be a way of avoiding the real issues involved and, if this is the case, the dream murder may show how you feel about being ‘murdered’ by lack of love or trust.

If you are pulling things out of your body in your dream, this suggests growing self-knowledge; you are becoming aware of thoughts and emotions of which you were previously unaware. See also SICKNESS AND HEALTH.... The Element Encyclopedia

ESCAPE

Example: I dreamt I was a prisoner with many others. Myself and other men were outside the prison working. Then a tremendous explosion blew a hole in the prison wall. I knew prisoners were trying to escape. I saw some wardens and shouted or signalled to the prisoners to be care- fiiT (Terry D). Terry worked as a therapist without scholastic qualification. Terry represents his attitudes to authority as the prison, and sees more of his work potential escaping those attitudes.

Example: ‘1 often dreamed I was being chased by boys or men. I would suddenly take off like a helicopter and fly away. Sometimes narrowly escaping from my pursuer’ (MC). As in the example, we often use escape’ in a dream to avoid difficult feelings. This is like reading an exciting novel because it distracts our attention from problems in our marriage.

ESCAPING DANGER

If you wake up before being caught, eaten or beaten, you need to ask yourself what you need to wake up to. What are you missing or avoiding in waking life? Things won’t get better until you face up to them? Dreams about breaking free from jail, cages, ropes or shackles may point to a desire for release from a situation, such as a job that is causing stress. The elation surrounding dreams of leaving jail may suggest feelings about a new opportunity in our life. However, if no joy accompanies the liberation, this could suggest anxiety about the challenges that lie ahead. Breaking out of jail on the other hand testifies to a determination to create your own chances and give free reign to talents that have too long been repressed. Alternatively, if you have been depressed recently, break-out dreams could suggest the need to seek serious help, as the dream may signify a yearning for the ultimate release—death. If, on the other hand, you are rescued in your dreams, or help rescue someone, this can express the need to liberate creative energies or some aspect of yourself that isn’t being developed in waking life.... HAT / CAP / HOOD / TURBAN

For Jung, hats symbolized thought, so if you are changing hats in your dream, this may be a sign of personal growth where long-held views are old hat and new ideas are developing. Freud, on the other hand, believed that the hat was a sexual symbol. Nowadays it is more likely to be seen as a symbol of authority, although if you take your hat off to someone in your dream, you are showing them your respect. In general, dream hats suggest intelligence and aspirations—your thinking cap—because they are worn on the head.

If your hat is taller or grander than everyone else’s in the dream, what could the aim of your unconscious be to set you apart in this way? Did you tip your hat in the dream or, perhaps because you have been accused of having ideas above your station, was it knocked off? If you are wearing a crown, do you feel that you deserve the acclaim of others in waking life?

Headgear is also associated with allegiance to a profession, team or particular roles in life; for example, a judge’s wig suggests justice. Your dream may be suggesting that you can learn much from the qualities displayed by that role.

If the hat is a helmet, this is a symbol of protection. A dream of wearing a hood may suggest secrecy and concealment. Although they also hint at flirtatious behavior, fans don’t protect but hide the face, as do veils (which furthermore have connotations with grief and mystery) and hoods (which also have connotations with death), so if any of these accessories feature in your dream, see if you can make any connections with your waking world. From whom or what are you trying to hide? For the devout Muslim or Sikh, turbans are symbols of authority, strength and dignity; for those outside these religions, the turban may be associated with the mysteries of the East, and thus can represent spiritual aspirations, as well as a sense of the exotic and a desire for more excitement in everyday life. It may also draw the dreamer’s attention to a male authority figure.... The Element Encyclopedia

IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT OUR BRAIN WAS WASHED FROM HEAD TO TOE WHILE SLEEPING

Scientists have found that the human brain is washed during sleep through a study on 13 subjects. According to the research, blood flows out of the brain during sleep, while the cerebrospinal fluid washes the brain. A team led by Laura Lewis, who is working at Boston University, made an interesting scientific discovery. The team, which has been working on the human brain for a while, has discovered that when people sleep, their brains are washed with cerebrospinal fluid. So your brain is completely washed through rhythmic and breakthrough waves while you sleep. According to previous studies, Lewis says that they already know that neurons in the brain have electrical wave activities, but that they have discovered that there are also waves in the cerebrospinal fluid. Scientists have illustrated the phases of the brain during sleep so that the research can be done, and the images we will share with you shortly reveal how this washing process will be. According to the data obtained in the research, after the people sleep, the brain neurons do not function, and the blood flows out of the brain. It is precisely at this time that the cerebrospinal fluid comes into play and washes the brain from beginning to end. Laura Lewis states that the findings from the research are very important because she hopes that these findings may lead to new discoveries. Lewis’ hopes are about psychological and neurological discoveries. Because brain waves can combine with blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid, especially for the investigation of age-related normal impairments. The reason for this is that as people age, their brains produce less and slower waves. So this research could both open a new door and be a glimmer of hope, especially for the treatment of alzheimer’s disease. Lewis made this important discovery with 13 people aged between 23 and 33. Considering getting help from the subjects at older ages in the ongoing processes of his research, Lewis states that they can understand how the movement in the brains of people who are older is going to be. Lewis says that so they can make a new discovery about alzheimer’s.... Dreampedia

LANDSCAPE

The landscapes of dreams are symbolic scenarios in which each and every one of the elements that comprise it should be considered. For example, for a person overwhelmed by financial problems, a mountain ridge can mean a profit chart and economic losses. Now, to understand the symbolic meaning of a landscape you must distinguish the predominant features from the minor ones. So, when an element reigns above all others and unifies them (sea, desert, etc.), you must interpret the dream in terms of this main component. But if, instead, the landscape offers variety and balance of different elements, then it must be analyzed as if it were a painting, paying attention to the shapes of objects (flat, pointed, round, etc.) and the colors that stand out.

Lasso The meaning of the symbol varies depending on the type of lasso.

If decorative ones appear in your dream, you are probably in a moment when you need others to show you affection and tenderness. Your emotions are going through a fragile stage and you are not very sure of what you feel. You also don’t know how others feel about you. That is why you seek security in expressions of affection If a lasso is around your neck, preventing you from breathing normally, it means that you are immersed in a stressful process that may make you lose your nerve. LANDSCAPES

The landscape in a dream can be an integral part of the interpretation. It usually mirrors feelings and concepts that we have and therefore reflects our personality.

A rocky landscape would suggest problems, whereas a gloomy landscape might suggest pessimism and self-doubt.

A recurring scene may be one where in childhood we felt safe, or may reflect a feeling or difficulty with which we have not been able to come to terms. Landscapes do tend to reflect habitual feelings rather than momcntarv moods.

Dream landscapes can have a bizarre quality about them in order to highlight a particular message.

For instance, there may be trees made of ice, or rocks made of sugar.

The plot of the dream may be important in arriving at the correct interpretation of these symbols (see Introduction).

The landscape in a dream can also indicate how we relate to other people.

To be in a desert might represent loneliness, whereas to be in a jungle might represent a very fertile imagination.

3- Spiritually, the landscape in a dream can suggest improvements which we can make in handling our own moods and attitudes.

If the landscape changes between the beginning and end of the dream, we perhaps need to make corresponding changes in everyday life.... Ten Thousand Dream Dictionary

LANDSCAPES AND SETTINGS

When the setting of your dream is particularly prominent in your dream, it is usually trying to convey to you some kind of message from your unconscious. The setting of a dream is the environment or landscape in which the action takes place. Sometimes the place reflects your mood but it can also be a reminder of a particular time in your life or of particular people. In general, the setting signifies the environment in which the main action of your life is happening. For example, if you dream of walking across the road in a busy city in the rain, your dream has a completely different setting to going for a walk in a park on a sunny day.

Try to assign a feeling and function to the setting of your dreamscape; that busy city might convey the feeling of purpose and speed, together with the function of work; that park might suggest the feeling of relaxation and the function of refreshment. When you have defined your feeling and function, try to see what part they play in your waking life and what the other details of the dream say about them.

Bear in mind, too, that you need to consider personal associations. A countryside walk may conjure up an image of heaven for some people but of hell for others, particularly if they suffer from severe hay fever.

Interpreting the symbolism of the dream setting can give you an insight into your own inner landscape.

If the setting is familiar, look out for symbols of your work or home situation to decide whether the dream is about your professional or personal life. Such a scene may also take you back to childhood or a time of learning.

If the setting is not familiar, or from your past, think about how it may relate to the emotional climate of a current situation. Recurring landscapes in dreams indicate feelings to which you often return; if the same scenes recur, they suggest habitual attitudes with which you approach a situation. Recurring scenes of your past represent a stance you developed at that time in your life. Although landscapes do tend to reflect habitual feelings rather than temporary moods, if the landscape does change in your dream, perhaps you need to make corresponding changes in your everyday life or in your approach to life. Composite scenes, consisting of many images that you recognize in one setting, are usually drawing your attention to particular qualities or moods which have relevance to the content of the dream. The country where your dream is set may also have significance. See also FOREIGN COUNTRIES.

Bear in mind, too, that the light, the weather and other features of your dream landscape all contribute to the setting and are all saying something about your mood or the feelings the dream inspires. Light is a common symbol of consciousness, so a sunny landscape will indicate clarity and awareness and a bright and sunny place will suggest fun and liveliness. Dark places in general represent the unconscious, although landscapes that become dark or dreary during the course of the dream may also refer to your subjective view of the world; for example, a dark shadowy murky scene signifies feelings of depression. A place that becomes lighter and brighter during your dream suggests possibilities and potentials, whilst the dim illumination of moonlight is a common symbol of intuition.

The nature of the weather in your dream will also express how you are feeling. Bad weather may foretell of troubles lying ahead, rain falling may indicate a release of tension, whilst the appearance of a rainbow across the landscape might suggest your troubles have found some sort of resolution. A beautiful place in a dream may be encouraging you to use your creative imagination in waking life, a sheltered place might be offering peace and security, unknown places could be revealing aspects of yourself of which you may be unsure and wide open spaces offer you a taste of freedom from confinement, whether emotional or physical.

The structure of the landscape also reflects your feelings about the content of your dream. A landscape that is hard to travel over or live in says much about the emotional or practical obstacles in your waking life. Your dream may have created a symbolic scenario to show you the things that are preventing you from being happy and fulfilled.

What you see lying ahead of you in a dream, such as a mountain or a flight of stairs, is significant as it represents the challenges you have yet to face. Obstacles in dream landscapes may express your everyday concerns. For example, you may find it impossible to cross a busy street in your dream; the street may well be a symbol of an impending exam.

If some aspect of your dream landscape did not seem right or was out of proportion, perhaps you are not seeing things straight in waking life. In your dream, look out for other symbols that suggest some aspect of your waking life is out of proportion; if your dream has a surreal or supernatural elements, refer to the chapter on SURREALISM AND FANTASY.... MURDER, MURDERER, BEING MURDERED. HANGING, STABBING, SUFFOCATING. DROWNING

Vision: Dreaming about being murdered: difficulties in the near future. Murdering someone else: watch out and don’t be careless, you could be the one who gets hurt. See Aggression.

If you are hanging yourself: it is a message from your unconscious that your personality is unfolding and still “up in the air,” but this stage will soon be completed. See Hanging.

A stabbing refers to an immature, aggressive sexuality (See Dagger) and the desire for a quick resolution to conflicts or problems. Suffocating refers to situations you have not yet accepted. See .Asthma. Drowning either serves as a warning or indicates that you are about to drown under the weight of present events, responsibilities, and dangers. See Execution, Gallows, Murder. Being an eyewitness to a murder: the disagreements that people around you have are none of your business—leave them alone. Murder-dreams imply that you will live to a ripe old age. Dreaming about being murdered: are you refusing to accept the harsh reality—that a phase in your life is coming to an end? If you are participating in a murder: you are shamelessly exploiting someone’s bad luck for your own ends.

Depth Psychology: While you feel you should be ashamed of what you have done, you have pushed your guilt feelings underground and now are facing the consequences. Sometimes the dream also means that you want (or need to) end a phase in your life.

The murderer represents hidden fears coming to the fore, which weaken or threaten to destroy your personal growth. Do something about it and do it quickly. Dreaming about murdering someone: you are struggling with problems and would like nothing better than to get rid of someone (unconscious aggression). Clear the air as soon as possible! Dreams about murder mean that an insight or opportunity for advancement has been “murdered.” Usually you yourself are the murderer and are being murdered. ORPHANED / ADOPTED / FOSTERED

If you dream of being an orphaned, adopted or fostered child, this usually suggests that your relationships with members of your family in waking life have created some sense of loss and rejection in you. Dreaming of having lost your parents or being rejected by your parents so you become an orphan, adopted or fostered child may denote that you feel you didn’t get their unconditional love and attention, and that you have to find your own way in the world without their support. Alternatively you may feel as if you are an outsider in the relationship to your family. Perhaps you have been excluded or perhaps you have little in common with them. Do you consider yourself rejected or at odds with the rest of your family? Whatever the reason, your dream may be suggesting to you that you need to create a surrogate family to get the support you need; this may be with your friends or your partner, and they will be able to help you feel loved, secure and accepted for who you are.

Another explanation of such dreams is that it is time for you to be more independent and self-reliant by moving away from your parents. When life forces you into permanently or temporarily losing your parents, either by death or by other circumstances such as foreign travel, you may experience dreams of being orphaned. The dream might not refer to your relationship with your family at all, but might be telling you that you are feeling abandoned, unloved, rejected and misunderstood by your partner, friends or colleagues in waking life.

If this is the case, the dream connects to feelings of belonging or not belonging in waking life.

If you are looking after an orphan in your dream, you are attempting to heal that part of you that feels unloved.... The Element Encyclopedia

RED

In waking life red is associated with fire, heat, blood and passion. In dreams, these ‘hot’ themes are often mirrored and the interpretation is typically connected with passion, energy or vitality. Red is also associated with anger and rage towards something or someone, and, through its association with fire, can represent danger and prohibition. This is reflected in the red ‘stop’ signs of many countries’ traffic-control systems. The color also indicates the angry urge to fight back and, if you are experiencing such violent emotions and you dream of red, take it as a warning to exercise restraint, or the consequences will be tragic.

Revenge or retaliation is not advisable.

If red features in your dream, perhaps you should consider the tone that was being used. Lighter shades of red can be representative of excitement (especially sexual), passion, energy, and life. However, deeper or ‘weighed- down’ shades of red may be indicative of the overheated emotions of lust and anger, and the impulsive desire for revenge. Notice again how the ‘stop’ sign is red; red can thus be seen as a hint from your subconscious to stop acting in a particular way.

Because red is the color of blood, it may also denote physical strength, vital energy and the life force which, depending on the context of the dream, may be ebbing away or throbbing with life. A red heart may stand for deep-seated sexual energy or desire in waking life, red ears may suggest embarrassment or guilt, whilst a red nose is often thought to indicate an inquisitive nature. Red flames are believed to indicate the threat of danger, red wine is often linked to feelings of satisfaction and contentment, and a red rose is typically tied to the idea of romance and passion. Who was holding the red rose in your dream?

Other considerations to take into account include whether the red in your dream suggests being ‘in the red’ (in debt), or brings to mind a person who holds socialists beliefs (a red). It can also refer to a scarlet (sexually permissive) woman, or to waving the proverbial red flag at something, or someone, who provoked you. Keywords: danger, shame, sexual impulses, passion and urges.

Perhaps you need to stop and think about your actions.... The Element Encyclopedia

The red carpet is a symbol itself, indicating a special path for people of a certain elevated status. There are two implications when a red carpet is present. One is that there is a special event taking place.

The second relates to the exclusivity of passage relegated to only a certain few. This symbol can indicate a sense of aspiration in a dream.

If you are witnessing someone else on a red carpet, that person is an aspect of your own personality that has the capability of helping you aspire to greater things. This image in a dream may also point to a desire to be recognized for some special ability or particular accomplishment in your life.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

REDUNDANCY

Dreams in which you are fired from your job, dismissed by your employer or refused work may reflect insecurities about the regard in which you are held by the people with whom you work. On the other hand, your dream may reflect your sense of redundancy in another area of your life. Perhaps your children have grown up and you don’t feel needed as a parent anymore.

If your position at work is uncertain in your waking life, your dreaming mind may also be preparing you for the inevitable and highlighting the importance of being prepared.

If you did actually lose your job and your dreaming mind keeps reminding you of your sense of rejection, then you need to work through your feelings and move forward with your life.

SCAPEGOAT

The word scapegoat actually comes from the sacrificing of a goat to appease the gods, and in dreams this symbol can be highly relevant.

If in our dream we are the scapegoat for someone else’s action then we are being turned into a victim. Other people maybe trying to make us pay for their misdcmcanours.

If we are making another person a scapegoat then this indicates a blame shift, and that we are not taking responsibility for our own actions.

Often in families and teams one member takes the brunt of all the projections from the rest of the family or group. He (or she) is continually belittled or laughed at. and can be blamed for all sorts of things which are not their fault. They become the scapegoat. In dreams, however, there is recognition that there is an aspect of cooperation and collaboration in the dreamer. We need to do something to redress the balance, and often the solution can only come from us.

SHARED DREAM

Sometimes people discover—usually accidentally—that they have experienced a virtually identical dream, perhaps at the same time. In this variety of psychic dream, two or more people seem to experience the same events and have similar images. As an example, two people might both report having dreamt of mending the same component on a car, having the same conversation or visiting the same place. Shared dreams may be much more common than we imagine, because the discussion of dreams is usually fairly limited because of the fast pace of modern life. The theoretical implications are fascinating. Are they caused by the dreams using a common symbol representing a similar thought concerning something that happened in the day? Is there telepathic communication between the dreamers? Or can a part of your consciousness actually enter someone else’s mind? These questions need to be explored. Such anomalies often act as clues that lead to great new truths.... The Element Encyclopedia

SWEARING / SHOUTING

Swearing or using bad language in your dream suggests hidden anger or fear. Both Jung and Fritz Perls believed that each dream character and object is an aspect of yourself. They believed our character is multifaceted and strives towards wholeness, so if your dream contained foul language, you might consider that the raunchy vocalizations are trying to get your attention. Maybe you are too timid in waking life and need to listen more to the parts of yourself that are forceful, pushy or lewd? If you find that someone is shouting at you in your dream, this may be a warning, urging you to slow down and think things through; it may also, however, be a greeting or applause for your achievements.

If you hear cheering in your dreams, this often indicates happy or triumphant feelings, although it could also be wish-fulfillment.... The Element Encyclopedia

UNDERCLOTHES / LINGERIE / PAJAMAS / SWIMWEAR

Almost any item of clothing can be regarded as a symbol of sexuality, particularly items that draw attention to what they are covering, such as underwear, bikinis, swimsuits and lingerie. Is the item you are wearing clean or dirty? Depending on which it is, what does that say about your attitude to sex? Generally, underwear in a dream is thought to be a symbol of your hidden attitudes and prejudices.

If you dream of feeling embarrassed about being seen in your underwear, it may suggest an unwillingness to reveal your true feelings, or to have your opinions made public. What color is your dream underwear? Red may reveal hidden passions, yellow a secret fear and so on.

If your underwear is dirty or torn, it may reveal that you are not at ease with yourself right now and feel uncomfortable about your sexuality. Ancient dream oracles suggested that dreams of being in your underwear were an omen of guilty pleasures that would cause much grief. A dream that features nightwear does not necessarily have a sexual connotation; you may simply need more sleep. Pajamas and nightdresses also suggest openness and relaxation.... UNDERWEAR

All clothing represents our self-expression on some level. Additionally, clothing can be thought of as protection against the elements. Both of these concepts are reflected in the symbolic meaning of clothing. Underwear takes these concepts to a level of privacy and intimacy because they are worn under your outer clothes, make direct contact with your body, and act primarily as covering for the sexual areas. In this way, underwear represents your desire to keep a lid on your sexuality. Also to be considered is the layered desire to protect yourself from being completely vulnerable; if you are in your underwear in your dream, you are certainly exposed, but are not as vulnerable as you might otherwise be. Your mother always warned you to wear clean underwear in case you got into an accident and had to be taken to the hospital.

This element of being prepared for exposure also relates to the shame associated with our most private experiences of being human.... Complete Dictionary of Dreams

UNPREPAREDNESS

In Western cultures, this motif often emerges in dreams in which we find ourselves taking an examination for which we are completely unprepared. For example, college students often have anxiety dreams around the end of the term that involve examinations they have not studied adequately for; this occurs regardless of whether or not the student has actually studied enough.

The unpreparedness motif can also emerge in other ways, such as when we dream about standing before a crowd on a stage or at a public forum, then realize that we have forgotten what we were going to say, or discovering we were never prepared to say anything in the first place.

A dream about being unprepared to take a test or give a speech might reflect anxieties about anything from how we will do on an upcoming job interview to whether we will succeed in a new marriage.

The core anxiety concerns doubts about our adequacy.... Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia

WITHERED OR DEAD FLOWERS

To see withered or dead flowers in your dream denotes disappointments and gloomy situations. You may not be utilizing your full potential and talents.

If you receive wilted blooms in dreamland as a gift from someone you know, think about the nature of your relationship with that person; your unconscious might have detected that the relationship is weakening. Similarly, if you are pricked by a hidden thorn in a bunch of roses given by colleague who was congratulating you in a dream scenario, is it possible that they are concealing real feelings of resentment towards you in waking life? If you gave a bunch of dead flowers to a difficult or strict former schoolteacher, could this highlight your extreme dislike of that person? To see flowers blooming in barren soil, however, signifies that your energy and cheerful nature will enable you to overcome your grievances.... The Element Encyclopedia
